RACISM, VULGARITY AND HATE WILL BE THE DEATH OF AMERICA. IT'S GOT TO STOP.

When are Republicans throughout the United States - from Maine to Hawaii - going to allow it to sink in to their brains that Donald Trump is the cause for the accelerated display of racism, vulgarity and hate in our country? So-called comedy actress Roseanne Barr, (I don't think she's funny), can call it a "bad joke" in "bad taste" that she blames on "Ambien" sleeping pills, but the fact of the matter is, Barr - a staunch Trump supporter - followed the Trump playbook when she tweeted a vile, racial slur about former President Barack Obama's senior adviser Valerie Jarrett.  Barr - on Tuesday, May 29th, 2018 - compared Jarrett, an African-American, to an "ape" - "muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj."  Likening black people to apes and monkeys is a common choice of words used by racists when they viciously attack African-Americans.

It's apparent that Barr considers spewing venomous verbiage off her toxic tongue the same way Trump does regarding "sexual assault" of women. Remember, it was former Vice President Joe Biden who - as an October 2016 guest on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers - described "The Donald's" actions towards females as "the textbook definition of sexual assault."  Mr. Biden's strong reaction came after the October 2016 release of that infamous 2005 Access Hollywood video when Trump admitted that he would grab a woman's genitals because "when you're a star, they let you do it.  You can do anything.  Grab 'em by the p--sy.  You can do anything." I suppose Roseanne Barr thought she too could get away with anything...including labeling an African-American woman with a racial epithet.

But Barr's not the only person recently who should be condemned for despicable language.  During a monologue on her late night TBS talk show, host and comedienne Samantha Bee - who I usually find to be...laughing out loud funny - referred to Ivanka Trump as a "feckless c--t."  It's a "c-ntroversy" that - along with Barr's tweet - is a nationwide domino effect, in part, as a result of Donald Trump's disgusting verbalization over the last three years.  I say, in part, because I can't entirely blame Trump for the rampant run of reprehensible remarks.  After all, America's not oblivious to profanities.  It's just that hearing obscene language - especially in a public forum - from entertainment celebrities and political heavyweights...was not as common until Trump entered the arena as a presidential candidate.  That being said... Barr isn't a stranger to being smutty and heartless.  In 2013, she made a simian comparison to another top adviser to President Obama.  About former national security adviser and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice - who also happens to be African-American - Barr tweeted five years ago that "Susan Rice is a man with big swinging ape balls."

Generally speaking, I am a second chance type of guy.  And although I've never been a Roseanne Barr fan, I'd be a hypocrite if I sided with numerous other people across the country who feel that ABC should never have given Barr's show the green light this year because of her disgraceful tweet in 2013.  But apparently Barr's apologies are meaningless and she doesn't learn from her mistakes.  Therefore, I applaud ABC for canceling its network's number one television show for 2018. However, the sudden cancellation of the Roseanne reboot unfairly placed a great many actors, producers, writers, directors, staff and crew on to the unemployment line.  Meanwhile - according to TMZ - the dead Roseanne series may crawl out of its coffin and be resurrected with a focus on Sara Gilbert's character, Darlene Conner. ABC is reportedly doing what it can to save the jobs of all the other people who worked on the Roseanne show.

When the reboot of Roseanne was given the ax, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey targeted Barr's repulsive remark about Valerie Jarrett as "abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values." Kudos to Dungey - and the powers that be at ABC's parent company, Disney - for booting Barr off the network's primetime schedule.  I would bet that Barr's racist demonstration was also quite offensive to Dungey.  She's the first African-American woman to head up a broadcast company.

As for reruns of the original Roseanne series, Barr can say goodbye to any more money from syndication.  Paramount Network, TV Land, CMT (Country Music Television) and Laff have all shelved the videotapes (or digital copies) of episodes from Barr's old sitcom.  Plus...Barr's agents have given her a heave-ho as they understandably don't want to have any connection with a bigoted bigmouth. So...the money-well has gone dry for Roseanne Barr.  Perhaps now she'll get it through her thick skull that it doesn't pay to be a racist.  That is unless you're Donald Trump. Remember...Republicans handed Trump the keys to The White House after he spent nearly a year-and-a-half littering the campaign trail with racist remarks and other inappropriate comments and gestures.  But voters didn't care that Trump offended people who opposed him.  And after the Charlottesville, Virginia protests in August 2017, Trump supporters had his back as a president...who defended white supremacists and neo-Nazis.

Roseanne Barr not only offended Valerie Jarrett, but an entire race of people, along with other decent individuals from other races, other ethnicities and nationalities, as well as minorities of all kinds who are against any form of civil rights ugliness.  And with her tweet, Barr directly insulted Muslims too.  But then...detestable dialogue about Muslims is part of Donald Trump's xenophobic travel ban towards people from other lands who Trump would like to permanently prohibit from darkening the whiteness of our nation. Currently, immigrants, refugees and visa holders from Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen are not allowed to enter the United States. Other than North Korea, the populations of the remaining aforementioned countries are predominantly Muslim.

On Tuesday night, May 29th, Roseanne Barr returned to Twitter and wrote..."I'm sorry 4 my tweet."  In another tweet, Barr elaborated further.  "I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans.  I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks.  I should have known better.  Forgive me - my joke was in bad taste."

But no apology is going to change the minds at ABC.  When network executives pulled the plug on Roseanne, they killed it.  They put a bullet in the brain of their gigantic cash cow that starred Roseanne Barr.  Network brass knew that if they didn't remove the show from their line-up, there'd be backlash from many others on the ABC payroll...not to mention other actors, advertisers and viewers.  ABC rightfully was not going to permit Barr from using their network as a platform for bigotry and hate.  ABC will lose millions of dollars from the sponsors who were airing their commercials on Roseanne.  But if a new version of the show goes in to production...and if the television audience makes it a hit...the big bucks that were lost by the cancellation of Roseanne, may find their way back to ABC.  Reportedly, Roseanne advertisers stated that if ABC hadn't tossed Barr's show into the garbage, those sponsors would have skedaddled anyway.  Whether ABC decides to re-format the show...under a new title and with a new direction...is yet to be determined.

Roseanne Barr blames her Ambien sleeping pills for her disturbing behavior.  It's been documented in the past that some patients who take Ambien have claimed to suffer all sorts of side effects...ranging from sleepwalking to binge eating to driving without remembering doing it.  But the pharmaceutical company that makes Ambien - Sanofi-Aventis - says their medication doesn't cause racism.  It's "not a known side effect."

I would find it very hard to believe that any medicine could be the source to motivate a person to send racist tweets.  But over the years, "Ambien defense" has been the excuse by violent criminals who have been accused of everything from rape to murder.

Meanwhile, Valerie Jarrett - who is a distinguished American businesswoman and respected former government official - did not deserve to be mistreated in such an atrocious manner.  Appearing May 29th on the MSNBC town hall meeting special, Everyday Racism in America...Jarrett tagged this entire matter with Roseanne Barr..."a teaching moment."  I just hope that other Americans...whose veins are flowing with racist blood...will learn from Barr's sickening and contemptible comment...and the results that followed.  As for Valerie Jarrett...whose taken the high road...she impresses me as one hell of a classy lady.

The chairman and chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company personally apologized to Jarrett for Barr's wretched words.  Jarrett told MSNBC that Bob Iger said "he had zero tolerance for that sort of racist, bigoted comment, and he wanted me to know before he made it public that he was canceling the show."

But Barr is adamant that she's "not a racist" and that she "never was and never will be."  In a tweet on Wednesday, May 30th, Barr went on to say..."One stupid joke in a lifetime of fighting 4 civil rights, 4 all minorities."  As I noted earlier, though...it's not just "one stupid joke."  Barr needs to be reminded that she called Susan Rice an "ape" in 2013.

So ABC has barred Barr by canceling her TV show.  But Samantha Bee and her TBS program should not be.  Bee tweeted her apology on Thursday, May 31st for cussing on May 30th. To me, she seemed to be genuinely remorseful for her insensitivity towards Ivanka Trump.  "I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night.  It was inappropriate and inexcusable.  I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it."

The host of the TBS show, Full Frontal...Bee made her unkind reference to Donald Trump's older daughter when she criticized "Daddy Donald's" plan to separate children from their parents who are undocumented immigrants.  "You know, Ivanka... that's a beautiful photo of you and your child.  But let me just say - one mother to another - do something about your dad's immigration practices, you feckless c--t!"

TBS - a division of Time-Warner - also expressed their apology for Bee's obscenity. In a statement on May 31st, TBS admitted..."It was our mistake too, and we regret it."  TBS acknowledged that the filthy word Bee used "should not have been aired." But as sleazy as the "c" word is...it's not a racist term...and therefore - given the out-of-the-box format of Bee's television show...I don't think she should lose her job.  As I mentioned earlier...I'm all for someone - in instances such as these - to receive a second chance.  There's no argument that the word Bee used to orally assail Ivanka Trump was trashy and wrong.  But unlike Roseanne Barr...Samantha Bee gets paid for potty mouth comedy.  In this case, though...as Bee recognized...she indeed crossed a line that should not have been crossed.  Besides...Bee's act of vulgarity is not the same as Barr's act of racism. And that does make a difference. But not to two of Bee's advertisers who don't see it that way.  Autotrader and State Farm Insurance have taken their commercials off Bee's show.

Chelsea Clinton chastised Samantha Bee.  The daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tweeted..."It's grossly inappropriate and just flat-out wrong to describe or talk about @IvankaTrump or any woman that way."  It should be noted that Chelsea and Ivanka were once close friends.  But during a March 6th, 2018 guest appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS, Chelsea admitted that she and Ivanka have "not spoken in a long time."  I don't think anybody has to wonder why.

I agree with Chelsea Clinton's tweet.  Nevertheless, there is no reason for Bee to be seriously reprimanded.  Her crudeness should never be repeated.  But disciplinary action...in the form of suspension or cancellation...is not necessary.  Besides - unlike Barr - Bee didn't blame a drug or anything else for her crass comment.  She took responsibility herself.  But White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters on May 31st that Bee's "disgusting comments and show are not fit for broadcast. And executives at Time-Warner and TBS must demonstrate that such explicit profanity about female members of this administration will not be condoned on its network."

Donald Trump's spokesperson speaks on behalf of him...so when reading between the lines, it seems clear that Trump wants Bee fired and her show taken off the air. Again, though...Bee was not being racist...merely political...but nastily misogynistic. It's time, however, to turn the page and move forward.  Full Frontal with Samantha Bee is on the TBS schedule through 2020.

Why should any of us expect a nation that is void of vulgarity and removed of racism?  Let's be frank.  Donald Trump - for nearly seventeen months as a 2016 Republican presidential candidate...and for the last nineteen months as president-elect and the person actually sitting behind The Oval Office desk - doesn't give a damn who he offends...who he insults...or how loathsome or lewd he is or has been when he's done it. Democrats have expressed outrage by Trump's tweeting tirades and his reckless rally rants.  Republicans, on the other hand, not only elected him...but his base - that includes a collection of Kool-Aid drinking cheerleaders - continue to support and praise him...despite Trump's sometimes shocking shack of lies and appalling rhetoric.

And let us not forget that it was Donald Trump who - for years - took racism to a different level when he insisted that America's first black president was not born in the United States, but in Kenya.  As a result of the so-called "birther movement," 42 percent of Republicans - according to a poll by The Economist magazine and YouGov - still believe that President Obama was not eligible to be president.  Because of that false accusation, I've argued with Republicans for more than a decade that Trump is a racist.  Yet, in 2016, they voted for him.

On September 29th, 2016, I wrote a column titled...NO WOMAN SHOULD VOTE FOR DONALD TRUMP.  Still, enough females favored this foulmouthed philanderer who fancies falsehoods and whose repugnancy is rewarded.  As such, there is a vast amount of Americans who undoubtedly feel that if the president of the United States doesn't have to be nice...and courteous...and respectful of others...then they don't need to be either.  As a result, we now suffer an epidemic of hate...for which it might take a generation or more to cure.

In his first inaugural address on January 20th, 1993, President Clinton expressed the following prophetic proverb.  "There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured with what is right in America." However...what is wrong with America today...is Donald Trump in The White House.

And as part of his August 29th, 2009 eulogy for Senator Ted Kennedy...President Obama shared the following sentiments.  "What we can do is to live out our lives as best we can with purpose...and love...and joy.  We can use each day to show those who are closest to us, how much we care about them...and treat others with the kindness and respect that we wish for ourselves.  We can learn from our mistakes and grow from our failures.  And we can strive at all costs...to make a better world."

Maybe if Donald Trump took a lesson from President Clinton and President Obama...our world...and specifically our country...would be better.

And that's The Controversy for today.

  1. Republicans don’t need to allow it to sink into their brains because it is not true. The only one responsible for Roseanne Barr’s comments is Roseanne Barr. When will the Democrats allow it to sink in to their brain that just because they wish it, doesn’t make President Trump responsible for everything they feel is wrong in the world. It rained on Tuesday, it must be President Trumps fault, you name it you blame President Trump. Democrats love poor race relations in America; they push it so they can blame Republicans. The Democrats have no other policy besides identity politics and hate. Race relations in the US have been going downhill since January 20, 2009. NO it was not because Obama is black it is because he pushed it. Every time something happened to an African American it was the white guys fault, remember the “beer summit” how about Ferguson “hands-up don’t shoot” never happened, Obama was on the wrong side of it all, because he wanted to blame the white Cops. Roseanne Barr’s comments were disgusting and hateful and has said comments like this for years before President Trump was a national figure so don’t blame him blame her. Stop with the Joe Biden stuff and his stupid definitions, he need to retire and go back to being cute Uncle Joe who says “funny” stupid things. If it is "sexual assault" then almost every Rock Star in would belongs in jail, most rock bands have people they call finders or other things, it is there job to find willing pretty young girls (over 18) in some cases willing young men who will let the “Star” do anything, I have heard stars talk about having 2,3,4 or more girls brought backstage to have quick sex with them never even knowing their names, that’s the life of a “STAR” it is not "sexual assault" when they let you and in most cases want you to, why go back stage, everyone knows what goes on. As for Samantha Bee she is a disgusting low life hater and her show should be canceled. First to use the “C” word which is no better than people who use the “N” word about African Americans, then to insinuate an incestuous relationship between a father and daughter is despicable. This was not an off the cuff remark it was scripted, reviewed and taped, the network did nothing to stop it, she should be fired. If any TV personality had said that about Michelle Obama or one of the Obama daughters they would not only been fired but blacklisted from TV forever. You said “maybe if Donald Trump took a lesson from President Clinton” what lesson from Clinton? How to have an affair with a 22 year old intern, or how to cheat on his wife or be accused of sexual assault or even rape, all things former President Clinton has admitted to or been accused of.

    1. The response to the above reader will be in THREE parts.

      PART ONE OF THREE

I can respond to the bulk of your response by saying...if it looks like a duck...and it walks like a duck...and, of course, quacks like a duck (or in this case, tweets like a Trump)...then it must be a duck...(or in this case, ANOTHER Donald).

You Republicans amaze me when you say that "race relations in the U.S. have been going downhill since January 20th, 2009." You seem to forget that President Barack Obama won not just ONCE...but TWICE. Not only that, but President Obama beat John McCain in 2008 in a massive landslide...and Mr. Obama beat Mitt Romney in 2012 by a regular landslide. Race relations became an issue because of racist Republicans in Congress who decided they did not want to see President Obama succeed. But even with all the racist obstacles from the congressional right, President Obama was still a tremendously successful president.

Once again I have a Republican reader who doesn't read my column carefully. I really wish some of my readers would pay closer attention to my words. You write..."Roseanne Barr's comments were disgusting and hateful and has said comments like this for years before (Donald) Trump was a national figure so don't blame him blame her." If you CAREFULLY read my column above, I wrote..."It's a "c-ntroversy" that - along with Barr's tweet - is a nationwide domino effect, in part, as a result of Donald Trump's disgusting verbalization over the last three years.

As for your comment about former Vice President Joe Biden...don't be surprised if he ends up being elected president of the United States in November 2020.

Your comment about "rock star(s)" is reprehensible. I have personally worked with dozens of rock stars and I think the vast majority of them would be pissed as hell at you for thinking that "it is their (not there, learn how to spell or at least use spell-check) job to find willing pretty girls - over 18 - and in some cases willing young men who will let the "star" do anything." You're a jerk that has no clue what he (or she) is talking about. I'm sure there are some rock stars...and other celebrities...who have sex with people because the women (or the men) who hook up with the star have sought to do so. That's NOT what Donald Trump said in the Access Hollywood video. The specific woman that Trump was referring to when he said what he said to Billy Bush was not a lovesick fan who wanted to have sex with him. It was Nancy O'Dell...and if you watch the video again, you will see that Trump made it very clear that HE went after her...not the other way around, which is what you imply with your "rock star" analogy. You can't spin Trump's words to your own liking.

I stated that Samantha Bee was wrong. But as I also noted, her show should not be canceled. Nor is she "a disgusting low life hater."

You have no idea what you are saying when you compare the "N" word and the "C" word to each other. The "N" word is a racist word. The "C" word is profanity, just as the "F" word or any other so-called "four-letter words." And Samantha Bee was being political...not racist. She was wrong...totally wrong by using the word. And she has apologized. But as I said...I'm a second chance type of guy. Besides...Bee's comment did not "insinuate an incestuous relationship" between Donald and Ivanka Trump. "You know, Ivanka... that's a beautiful photo of you and your child. But let me just say - one mother to another - do something about your dad's immigration practices, you feckless c--t!" TBS was wrong in airing the comment, but Samantha Bee should NOT be fired. We don't live in an era of "McCarthyism." People don't get "blacklisted forever."

You're a Clinton hater through and through. Your remark about one of America's top 5 presidents - Bill Clinton - is disgraceful. My column this week will be on President Clinton. But I'm sure you and other Republicans will show your hatred with that column too. You'll love it!!!

  2. Once again you prove my point the Democrats play the race card. Your statement “Race relations became an issue because of racist Republicans in Congress who decided they did not want to see President Obama succeed” is a lie. They did not want him to succeed because of his POLICIES not his skin color! His policies were leftwing progressive policies that we as Conservative Republican disagree with and feel they were bad for America. Your comment shows you to be a hater of Conservative Republicans who is willing to play the race card with no prove of any racism just hate in your heart. My comment on rock stars, TV stars, athletes and more is correct, for example: Mick Jagger claims to have had sex with over 4000 women, Gene Simmons of Kiss claims over 4600 women, Charlie Sheen claims he has slept with over 5000 women, Warren Beatty claims over 12,000 and Wilt Chamberlain claimed in his book to have slept with over 20,000 women that is more than one a day for 54 years. As I said they couldn’t even have known all their names. Samantha Bee, she is a disgusting low life hater and her show should be canceled, she is a true hater of anything she doesn’t agree with and anything conservative. To most women I know being called the “C” word is the same to them as an African-American being called the “N” word, it is not racist but it is as disgusting and demeaning as if it was. Why did you ignore the her insinuation that there is an incestuous relationship between a father and daughter, she said “PUT ON SOMETHING TIGHT AND LOW-CUT AND TELL YOUR FATHER TO STOP IT” Samantha Bee is a disgrace to humanity and should not be on TV anywhere. The only people that get "blacklisted “are Conservatives and of course those women that wouldn’t have sex with Bill and Hillary’s friend Harvey Weinstein. I don’t hate Bill Clinton, he did some good things as President once the GOP took over the House, I just feel as a human being he is a low life scum.

  3. The response to the above reader will be in THREE parts.

    PART ONE OF THREE

I'm going to respond to you from the end of your comments and work my way up to the beginning.

President Clinton is in no way "a low life scum." Wait until my column later this week. You will - to use a phrase - have a cow. It's going to BLOW YOUR MIND!!! And I hope it does. And I hope it blows the minds of every Clinton hater throughout the country. But it will be ALL FACT.

Harvey Weinstein is a co-equal pervert to Donald Trump, so to compare Weinstein to Bill and Hillary Clinton is moronic. Just because one person is alleged to do something wrong doesn't mean that his friends are part of the same cake batter.

Do you really believe the crap that you write to me or do you send your comments to merely attempt to shock me? Because all you're doing is proving that you are a hater who is a combination of lunacy and ludicrousness. Nobody is "blacklisted." As I noted earlier, we don't live in an era of "McCarthyism." But there are conspiracies to prevent certain people to work...as I wrote in my NFL column regarding Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid. If you haven't commented there, you are welcome to do so. Just click on MAY in the archives at the top right of this column. A list of titles will appear from that month. Click on the NFL title.

The part of Samantha Bee's quote - "Put on something tight and low-cut and tell your father to f---ing stop it" had nothing to do with - as you "insinuate" - "an incestuous relationship between a father and daughter." You and anybody else are as sick as Donald Trump if you think that. I didn't even include that part of Bee's quote in my column. The line was ONLY a shot at Trump because he's a pervert. "The Donald" is the definition of "moral perversion."

The "C" word is a disgusting, ugly and and hateful word that in no way should ever be used to describe any woman. But it is NOT a racist term. It can, therefore, NOT be compared to the "N" word.

You think anybody who is not on your side - or not on Donald Trump's side - is a low life. You call President Clinton a "low life scum" and you call Samantha Bee a "low life hater." I've already explained my point in my column and in responses above why Bee's show should NOT be canceled.

Now here's the joke of all jokes. If you truly believe that any single person has had sex with 20,000 women...or with even 12,000 women...or, for that matter, with 5,000 or 4,000 women...then not only are those men (Wilt Chamberlain, Warren Beatty, Charlie Sheen and Mick Jagger) on drugs...or YOU are. It is INSANE to think that any one man - over a period of 54 years - in the case of Chamberlain - or over a period of 154 years - could ever have sex with 20,000 women. Even if Chamberlain was God's gift to women - which he is not - simple odds would mean that he would have to meet at least 40,000 women. That is, if you can believe that 50 percent of the women that Chamberlain meets are going to have sex with him. The idea of any of this could be true is so far-fetched that it's not even worth discussing...and I've already taken up too much space on The Controversy site to write as much as I just did. However, the same would apply to the other men noted above. TOTALLY INSANE! IT'S IMPOSSIBLE! And you're a fool if you believe that any of that could be true. I could get really graphic here with further explanations - biologically and physically - as to why the above is so ludicrous, but to not completely gross out or offend other readers...I'll not continue with this topic.

Now...let's hit your first point. I am NOT A HATER. I don't know how many times I have to write those words in columns and in responses to readers. Senator Mitch McConnell - the Senate Majority Leader - was out to destroy President Obama from day one. And McConnell admitted it. "Our top political priority over the next two years should be to deny President Obama a second term." Those words were spoken by McConnell in December 2010 after Mr. Obama was in office less than two years. Any other Republican controlled Congress would never have had a Senate Majority Leader or a Speaker of the House utter such words. And NO Democrat would have ever made such a vicious statement for a Republican President. Even with disagreements, with impeachment hearings and so much more, Democratic President Clinton and Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich accomplished a lot. And you can read about some of those accomplishments in my next column. And dare we ever forget that with Democratic Speaker Tip O'Neill, he and Republican President Ronald Reagan not only WORKED together, but they PLAYED together. Were Mr. Reagan and Mr. O'Neill best buds? Nobody thinks that. And they would fight tooth and nail for their side of the aisle. But they could still share a cold beer or a cocktail after hours. And they did. President Obama and Senator McConnell were never going to do that. But if they had...I can guarantee you that it would not have been..."a happy hour."

So yes...certain racist Republicans in Congress didn't want President Obama to succeed because he is African-American. It's too bad too...because so much more could have been accomplished to benefit our country and the vast majority of Americans.
