The photo and words on the graphic accompanying this column were posted - Tuesday night, July 18th, 2017 - on Twitter. It sparked an emotion in my heart, which ignited the rest of me to communicate my thoughts in this forum.
I find the question being asked..."If Donald Trump was the 8th dwarf what would his name be?"...insulting. Not to Donald Trump, but to "The Seven Dwarfs."
The original Brothers Grimm fairy tale - Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs - which was later brought to the silver screen in 1937 through the brilliance and genius of motion picture animation pioneer Walt Disney - is a classic story that features those seven whimsical and beloved characters. Therefore, for Donald Trump to be given even a smidgen of comparison to Doc, Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Happy, Dopey and Grumpy is to degrade these cherished creations from children's literature and cinematic history.
To honor and salute Donald Trump with a name...if he was the "8th dwarf"... would demean seven treasured "little people" who have put smiles on perhaps hundreds of millions of readers and moviegoers for nearly 80 years. Yes, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs - whether read from a book or watched in a theatre or on television - is fiction. But it is a fantasy that becomes real...every time the story is told...when moms and dads tuck their own tiny tots in to bed...or when the film comes to life for wide-eyed boys and girls of all ages.
Oh I realize that the organization that published the aforementioned graphic did so as a slap in the face to Trump and in a deprecatory fashion. After all, they tweet under the handle @StopTrump2020. And under other circumstances, I would welcome any form of disapproval towards Donald Trump. But making Trump "a Dwarf" is offensive to those rosy-cheeked, lovable little imps.
Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs was the world's first, full-length cel animated feature film...and Walt Disney's earliest animated feature. According to Box Office Mojo, of all movies produced throughout American history - when adjusted for inflation - Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs ranks 10th on the list of the highest grossing motion pictures. The American Film Institute awards this Disney musical masterpiece with the title "Greatest Animated Film Of All Time" on its list of 100 Greatest Films.
Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs has significantly impacted the culture of our country and of our planet...and has brought happiness to children around the globe.
About "The Seven Dwarfs," Walt Disney wrote..."In them we could instill boundless humor, not only as to their physical appearances, but in their mannerisms, personalities, voices and actions."
Donald Trump's physical appearance - namely his hair...his defining body language and hand gestures...and his key speech habits - including his frequent use of dramatic vocabulary with such phrases as "absolute and total catastrophe" and "one disaster after another"...his constant "I know it," "you know it," "they know it" and "everybody knows it"...his repetitive lines like "many, many, many, many" and "believe me, believe me"...are all forms of humor...so some of you may say. I, of course, am not on that bandwagon. Trump is not in any way funny. His actions are embarrassing and dangerous to the United States of America.
To describe Donald Trump as...or to share him with..."The Seven Dwarfs"... is - even in jest - not amusing.
And that's The Controversy for today.

Please be honest and admit your hatred for the President of the United States.
ReplyDeleteIt has nothing to do with "hatred." I do not honor or respect a man who treats people as he has over the last two years. Nor do I believe in a man whose actions are embarrassing and dangerous to the United States of America. And, as I stated in my column, it would be an insult to "The Seven Dwarfs" to salute Donald Trump by awarding him the name of an "8th Dwarf." GBD
