With an audience that he labeled "incredible," "record-setting" and "massive" - sixty percent of which were prepubescent and adolescent boys who were attending the Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree in West Virginia - Donald Trump turned a very special and time-honored event in to an atrocity.
Instead of using this traditional occasion as an opportunity for the President of the United States to express the importance of good citizenship...of responsibility... of helping others who are less fortunate...and to encourage youngsters to study hard in school and to always try to do their best...Trump lacked dignity and humility in a shameful presentation. Trump's motivation for his speech - on Monday, July 24th, 2017 - should have been one that promoted altruism and philanthropy...not evil backstabbing.
Donald Trump destroyed a magic time that Boy Scouts have cherished for eighty years...a visit to their Jamboree by our nation's President. But should we have really expected this heartless narcissist to appear as a distinguished role model for Scouts to respect? Obviously no. After all...according to a recent Associated Press/NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, 65 percent - or just about two-thirds - of the country's adults feel that Trump doesn't have much respect for America's traditions. This is a man who is categorically unfit to sit behind The Oval Office desk.
For 35 minutes, Trump stood behind a podium microphone and took it upon himself to take advantage of an enormous crowd totaling about 40-thousand people...24-thousand of which are future voters - some of whom will be 18 years of age before the 2020 election...some who already are - and to re-litigate his electoral vote win over Hillary Clinton. In unacceptable and unfair fashion, Trump bashed the former Secretary of State. He lambasted former President Barack Obama. And he blasted the press...criticizing them - as he usually does - as "the fake media." Plus, Trump trashed Members of Congress...and he even threatened and/or chastised two Secretaries in his own Cabinet.
With a reckless and brash tone, Trump treated his appearance at the Jamboree as if it was a campaign rally. In addition to the Scouts, another 16-thousand adults were on hand to hear Trump speak. He spouted out that Washington, DC is nothing more than a "cesspool, or perhaps (a) sewer"...and that "it's not a good place" because it's packed with "politicians." For the President to excoriate our nation's capital...and the people who sit in Congress...was totally inappropriate behavior at the Boy Scout Jamboree.
Boy Scouts are taught to be loyal. It's part of the Scout Law. But Donald Trump has proved to lack loyalty towards just about everybody in his Administration and from his campaign for President. Scouts are also taught to be trustworthy and reverent. But we know Trump does not practice those worthy words either.
Friendship and brotherhood were what I wanted Donald Trump to have had on his mind when talking to the Boy Scouts. Unfortunately, his toxic tongue spewed venom and hate.
Boy Scouts across America have condemned Trump's bizarre speech as an embarrassing exhibition. It was a disgusting display of wretched rhetoric that had no business being at this annual festivity for the Boy Scouts.
Trump began his remarks with the words..."Who the hell wants to speak about politics when I'm in front of the Boy Scouts?" But the liar that he is...Trump did very little...other than talk politics...and - while doing so - he metaphorically rammed razor-sharp knives in to the hearts of his political foes.
What should have been a wonderfully pleasant experience for some of America's first-rate kids...undoubtedly became an offensive demonstration of dictatorial demeanor.
The Scouts who attended the 2017 Jamboree deserved better than Donald Trump. But then...so do all Americans. Filmmaker Michael Moore tweeted that Trump's speech was a "shocking abuse of children."
Through eight years of my childhood, I was proud to be a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout...and although I never had the chance to go to a Jamboree, I have extremely fond memories of my Camporees...camp-outs...fishing and boating adventures...and other activities with my troops. So it sickens me to have witnessed Donald Trump's speech to those Scouts at this year's Jamboree. This is a man who is a nauseating pain in my belly.
On Thursday, July 27th, the Boy Scouts of America apologized for Trump's un-presidential actions. Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh stated..."For years, people have called upon us to take a position on political issues, and we have steadfastly remained nonpartisan and refused to comment on political matters. We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program." Surbaugh declared..."That was never our intent."
The Boy Scout Motto is "Be Prepared." That's my advice to all Democrats for the November 2018 and November 2020 elections. We need to "be prepared" with candidates who can overtake the Republicans in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives...and we further must "be prepared" with a Democratic presidential nominee who can win The White House.
Donald Trump's narcissism soared to unbelievable heights when - at a Youngstown, Ohio rally on Tuesday, July 25th - he ranked himself as the second most presidential leader in American history. "With the exception of the late, great Abraham Lincoln, I can be more presidential than any President that's ever held this office." Trump failed miserably to meet that high standard at the Boy Scout Jamboree. And I can assure you that very few Americans will agree with Donald Trump's egotistical statement.
Our 16th President was known as "Honest Abe." There's no way anybody is ever going to nickname Trump..."Honest Donald."
