When will it stop? When will American moms and dads of the 21st century be able to feel the way parents in the 1960s did when their children went to school in the morning? When will America's children of today's generation be able to feel the way kids in the 1960s did when their mothers and/or fathers went to work?
When my siblings and I walked to our elementary school - let's say in 1963 - the only concern my mother had was making sure I held the hands of my 6-year old sister and 5-year old brother when we crossed the street. I was 8. And as long as the 12-year old safety patrol guard watched the three of us - and other youngsters - we were not in any danger. We got to school safely.
The scariest thing throughout the day - for anyone my age - was hoping that a fourth grader wouldn't pick on any of us third graders. No parent, though - not my mom and dad, nor any other child's folks - ever feared a psychopath spraying bullets in a classroom. Nobody was ever afraid that - before the final school bell rang at the close of the day - we would have dead teachers and dead students because of a madman with a gun. At the other end of the chronological spectrum, a senior citizen from a half-century ago...could walk around the block in the community of his own home without being scared that a lunatic with a revolver was going to murder him. And Members of the United States Congress - whether they be Republicans or Democrats - would never think that a deranged would-be assassin would storm the practice of a charity baseball game and shoot four people including a leadership Representative from the House. Yes, we did lose a President to an assassin's bullets...and in that same decade...his brother - who most likely would have been elected President - was shot to death five months before the election. And yes...we lost a great civil rights leader to yet another assassin pulling the trigger. But school shootings and gun violence - in nightclubs, movie theaters and other public places nationwide - were nowhere as bad as it is today.
It was shortly after 7 o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, June 14th, 2017 when, in Alexandria, Virginia - just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC - House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, a 51-year old Republican, was at second base... when a 66-year old gunman from Illinois...with a vicious hatred...decided it was time to "Destroy Donald Trump and company" - as he wrote on Facebook - so he used a baseball diamond that was next to a children's playground...as a battlefield. Before the would-be killer attacked, he reportedly asked if the players were Democrats or Republicans. Moments later, he opened fire. Fortunately, the shooter's aim was off and he hit Congressman Scalise's left hip, not his head or heart. However, as this column is published, the Louisiana lawmaker remains in critical condition following surgery for fractured bones, injured internal organs and severe bleeding. A lobbyist and former Congressional staffer - Matt Mika - is also hospitalized in critical condition after reportedly being shot in the chest...while Congressional staffer Zach Barth was not seriously hurt after he was shot in the leg. He was treated and released. Scalise - being the third ranking Member of the U.S. House of Representatives - came to the softball practice with a protection detail of two Capitol police officers. When the would-be killer began firing an assault rifle and a pistol, the "field of dreams" became a combat zone. But the pair of Capitol cops became true heroes as they engaged in a firefight with the gunman...even though they too had been injured. Officer Crystal Griner is listed in good condition after a bullet wound in the ankle. Officer David Bailey was treated and released for a minor injury he received during the gunfight, but he was not shot. Thankfully Congressman Scalise was playing because if he wasn't there would not have been any armed guards on the scene and the result could have been a massive disaster with possibly twenty people or more killed. Donald Trump applauded Scalise's security detail. "Many lives would've been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers." Within three minutes of the attack, the Alexandria Police chief says his officers arrived to help take down the shooter...who died later at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in the nation's capital...which is where the victims are recovering.
As scheduled..."Play Ball" will be heard Thursday evening, June 15th when Congressional Democrats and Republicans will take the field at Nationals Park. To cancel this traditional baseball game - which not only raises money for various important charities, but builds bi-partisan friendship among the politicians - would mean victory for a dead gunman. And nobody would want him smiling from his grave.
You may recall that two months ago on Easter Sunday - April 16th - a kindhearted 74-year old Ohio grandfather was shot to death on a sidewalk in his own neighborhood when a mentally disturbed man randomly stopped him and shot him point blank for no reason whatsoever. And as you undoubtedly are aware, the killer recorded the tragedy and then posted it on Facebook. Two days later, the gunman put a bullet in his own head when police caught up to him in Pennsylvania following a tip from a McDonald's employee.
Six days before an armed maniac stole the life of that loving grandpa from "The Buckeye State"...an estranged husband of a California school teacher entered his wife's classroom and blasted six rounds of ammunition, which fatally wounded the teacher and killed a terrified 8-year old boy who was cowering behind her. Another male student - age 9 - was injured by bullets just before the gunman committed suicide. Authorities determined that the kids were not supposed to be victims, but that the youngsters were shot because they were too close to their teacher.
For many years at my high school in New Jersey, a guard sits at the main entrance. However, it was not the practice when I was a student. After all, I grew up in a quiet, upper-middle-class, low-crime community about thirty miles from New York City. My little town still fits that description. But now...nobody can enter my school without signing in and being met in the lobby by a teacher or student. That being said...once inside...what happens if the visitor has a pistol hidden under his or her clothes? So even with a guard at the door, a killer could make his or her way passed the security personnel.
There are a multitude of shootings daily in the United States...with 93 Americans killed and hundreds more wounded by gun violence everyday. No place can ever be considered completely safe. And we should never take for granted that there is. We must be totally alert to the people in our surroundings. But are we at a point in our country where anyone - including a family member - must be stopped at the front door of a school and subjected to a metal detector...and perhaps even patted down by an armed security guard before allowing a person to enter the campus building? Have we come to a time when not only the President, the Vice President and certain other high level federal officials should be guarded by Secret Service agents, but that every Member of the Senate and House should be too? And are we at a point that each and every one of us need to be fearfully focused - no matter where we go - that a gunman could shoot any one of us at any moment? Must we have to live this way? I sure hope not.
There are innocent men, women and children who are murdered everyday because of evil villains who possess guns. Tragically, there are other people - many other people - who just don't care enough to do whatever is necessary to prevent the disgruntled...the insane...and the ordinary criminal element...from using deadly weapons.
How many more Americans have to die before a federal law is passed by Congress and signed by the President of the United States so that universal background checks and extensive waiting periods are mandatory? I pray that Congressman Scalise - along with the other shooting victims - will fully recover from their wounds. Hopefully...because of the gunfire on the baseball field...Scalise - along with all the Republicans on his baseball team - will join together with the Democrats on the opposing team...to write a tough, strict and commonsense gun control bill that the entire House and Senate will approve...and that Donald Trump will sign in to law.
The safety of our country's children...and adults...are at stake. The loss of a family member...close friend...or anyone you care deeply about...is emotionally painful under any circumstances. But for your loved one to be shot to death...has to be devastating beyond imagination. How many more families have to suffer? How much more blood has to be spilled? When will the carnage cease? No mother, no father, no son, no daughter, no husband, no wife...not one single person in the United States should ever have to agonize from their kinfolk being slaughtered by someone with a gun.
The following was part of the gut-wrenching and heartbreaking sentiments of a grieving father after his son - a 20-year old California college student - was shot and killed in a deli mart in May of 2014. "You don't think it'll happen to your child...until it does." Similar words could apply to any one of us. You don't think it'll happen to someone YOU love...until it does.
Whether in the backyards of America's heartland or on the concourse of cosmopolitan centers, the senseless slaying of souls must stop. Guns must be removed from the hands of sick, troubled, mentally ill and criminally degenerate individuals. It is essential that none of them be allowed to have the opportunity to purchase a firearm. No monster should be given the chance to blast his or her way in to a school...in to a church...in to a restaurant...on to a baseball field...or in to any other public venue.
This column is generally motivated by political issues. And regular readers of The Controversy know quite well of my liberal, progressive views. I am a staunch Democrat. But I am a proud and patriotic American. And I oppose violence of any kind...especially when guns are involved. Still, many of my readers have - in the past - wrongfully accused of me of being "a hater." I hate no one. I don't hate Republicans. And although I don't agree with most everything that he stands for...or that he says, tweets or does...I don't hate Donald Trump. I certainly don't wish any harm to him or to anybody else...no matter what their politics are...no matter how much I disagree with them. We unfortunately live in a world where certain people choose to hurt others rather than discuss a matter calmly and peacefully. We unfortunately live in a world where certain people choose not to obey the laws of the land...and they don't care if after they take another life...they end their own. Americans are - for the most part - better than that. Sometimes, though, we have to fight for what we believe is right. With all due respect to English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton, I take the liberty to amend his 1839 adage. Let us remember that the tongue and the typewriter...(or today's computer)...are truly mightier than the sword...or the gun. The illegal and criminal use of a firearm for deadly purposes accomplishes nothing, but heartache. So we - as a country...as a Congress...as a President - must come together and achieve a goal that will protect Americans' rights...and our lives.
The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives all Americans the right to bear arms. But it does not give anyone the right to use those weapons to criminally harm others. Without better gun control laws, more tiny tots will go off to school in the morning...never to return home to their parents in the afternoon. Must it take another classroom of first graders to be brutally massacred before people wake up to do what is right? Let's not ever have another Sandy Hook. Let's not ever have more Congressmen shot.
And that's The Controversy for today.

This isn’t about gun control, it should be about the hate filled rhetoric by the left, and the left controlled media and democrats in general. Whether it the “Shakespeare in the Park” in NYC that has a modern day Caesar (dressed and made up to look like President Trump) being assassinated on stage, Kathy Griffin and the bloody head (un-American), the list goes on and on, just look at the hate in Facebook against the Conservatives, the President and the right, many calling for or condoning violence. Maybe you should look in the mirror and cut back on all the hatred you write in your column against President Trumps and the GOP. I hope you wouldn’t want to be the final straw that breaks the back and pushes some deranged person over the edge. More gun control is not the answer, a little bipartisan support, stopping the hateful speech against the President and the GOP; these are the things that might help.
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely flabbergasted and appalled by your comment. My column above was in NO WAY partisan. There was no hatred. In fact, I specifically composed a paragraph to try to connect to people like you who continue to accuse me of being a hater. I know who I am and what I am. YOU are the hater. My commentary DID NOT IN ANY WAY reflect one iota of hate. But we do have a gun problem in the United States. And hopefully, the shooting on the baseball field will join Republicans with Democrats in an effort to pass a gun control law that will bring satisfaction, if not happiness, to everyone. I've tried very hard when responding to Republican readers like you to not "name-call." But your remark that I "should look in the mirror and cut back on all the hatred that (I) write in (my) column against Trump and the GOP" is a despicable statement from someone who is obviously evil and hateful. I wish I knew who you were because I would certainly report you to law enforcement officials for your threat. And yes, your comment..."I hope you wouldn't want to be the final straw that breaks the back and pushes some deranged person over the edge" is a threat. I surely hope that some police official has read your words.
DeleteI don't generally respond to someone about an issue other than what I have written in a particular column, but since you mentioned Donald Trump I will say the following. Two-thirds of the United States would not vote for Trump if the election was today. He has a 33 to 35 percent approval rating (depending on the poll). Trump is, in fact, under investigation for obstruction of justice and Special Counsel Bob Mueller - along with the "Woodwards and Bernsteins" of today (that is the reporters of 2017 who are digging up more and more facts about Trump) - will probably get the evidence necessary for the U.S. House of Representatives to impeach Trump and the U.S. Senate to convict and remove Trump from office. Democrats in general - including me - would welcome bi-partisan support, but Trump goes off on his Twitter storms and makes matters worse. As long as he continues with his vile speech - whether in person or in his tweets - Trump divides our country more and more everyday. This is HIS fault...plain and simple.
And yes...as far as the horrific shootings in our country, gun control IS the answer.

I never said that this column was in anyway partisan. If you are honest you must admit most of your columns that are politically based are very partisan, very anti GOP and in my opinion very hateful against the President and conservatives. I don’t understand how in any way you can say I threaten you or made any threats. What I said was “I hope you wouldn’t want to be the final straw that breaks the back and pushes some deranged person over the edge” which means that your hateful statements could contribute to pushing a deranged, crazy person over the edge. I truly believe that words matter and just as this week shows there are crazy people out there that hate the GOP and the President. These crazy people may be influenced to do violent acts by peoples hateful words and actions such as the “Shakespeare in the Park” in NYC that has a modern day Caesar (dressed and made up to look like President Trump) being assassinated on stage, Kathy Griffin and the bloody head and by hateful columns such as yours. I stand by my statement that this is not a gun issue, and it is not the Presidents fault! There is a great amount of hate on both sides being fed by the media, by leaks and by a left that will do anything to bring down this President. In my opinion even with a 35% approval rating (if that is correct) if the election was held tomorrow against Hillary Clinton, I would still vote for him and I believe he would win again.
DeleteMy response to the above reader's comments will be in three parts.

You really don't seem to grasp on to the essence of The Controversy. I have admitted in my columns...many times throughout the nearly 5 years of publication...that I am an ultra-liberal, progressive Democrat. And yes...most of my columns that are politically based are in support of Democratic Party values and that which most Democrats stand for and want for the United States of America. By definition, "partisan is a supporter of a person, group, party or cause." Therefore, Democrats are, in fact, partisan...and Republicans are, in fact, partisan too. However, I have always welcomed compromise. But only when issues that are being proposed by the Republicans do not hurt the American people and/or harm our country. Unfortunately (as I stated above in an earlier response), because Donald Trump goes off on his Twitter storms, by doing so he makes matters worse. As long as Trump continues with his vicious, venomous and vile speech - whether in person or in his tweets - he divides our nation more and more everyday. As I said above...this is HIS fault...Donald Trump's fault...plain and simple.
Your words are indeed a threat. And all you do is inflame the situation with your language when you suggest (to quote you) that "the crazy people out there that hate the GOP and the President" might do something in a "deranged" manner that puts a "crazy person over the edge."
If you read my first column on Kathy Griffin, the title was KATHY GRIFFIN SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HERSELF. Those words were a quote (and I credit him) by Donald Trump. I chastised Kathy Griffin for what I called in my column... "disgusting and disturbing." I was very critical of Griffin for performing in "a repulsive and irresponsible manner." I did, however, write a second column titled KATHY GRIFFIN SHOULD BE FORGIVEN. And I believe after her multiple apologies, she should be forgiven. I also noted in that column that Donald Trump has never said "I'm sorry" to anyone he has insulted and offended over his year-and-a-half campaign for President.

DeleteI specifically wrote in my column above (and have done so in other commentaries) that I oppose violence of any kind...especially when guns are involved. My columns might generally be partisan, but I AM NOT A HATER and my columns are not hateful. I do NOT HATE anybody. I do NOT HATE Republicans. I do NOT HATE Donald Trump. And I certainly don't wish anybody harm in any way. So for you - and some of my other Republican readers - to constantly accuse me of being "a hater" does not in any way represent or describe me.
The shooting incident at the baseball field is indeed a gun control issue and you and other Republicans need to face that fact. True, the shootings were sparked by the gunman's "hatred" for Trump and the GOP, but if he had no access to guns, there would not have been anyone shot.
As for "the media" and "the left" "want(ing) to do anything to bring down this President"...(to use your words)...that is only because of Trump's constant lies, which have been documented and proven time and time again. All anyone needs to do is read his tweets or watch some of his speeches and interviews, especially the one he did with NBC News chief anchor Lester Holt, and you will see the falsehoods flow from his mouth.

END OF PART TWO OF THREE
PART THREE OF THREE
DeleteAs for your "election" statement...it would be mathematically impossible for Donald Trump to win again with two-thirds of the country against him. But the election is over. You, other "Trumpers" and Trump himself need to stop going back to the 2016 race. Donald Trump is, in fact, under criminal investigation for obstruction of justice. This is a fact. Trump's own words about firing FBI Director James Comey and wanting to shut down the Russia investigation is obstruction of justice. Despite your thinking about the media...The Washington Post and The New York Times - as The Post did during Watergate - are on the mark with their sources. Trump will be impeached by the House of Representatives and he will be convicted and removed from office by the Senate...OR...like Richard Nixon, Trump will resign before the House takes the steps to actually impeach...UNLESS...and anything is possible...but UNLESS...Bob Mueller proves that Trump is not guilty of any criminal activity. But I doubt that will happen, given the evidence revealed so far. And if Trump fires Mueller as Special Counsel - which would be a BIG, BIG mistake on Trump's part - then Congress will do as they did during Watergate, and a Senate committee - headed by someone like Senator Sam Ervin - would investigate. Ervin was known (to quote a published report) as "an even-keeled, conservative, independent-minded Democrat." And - along with Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of The Washington Post - Senator Ervin and his Senate Watergate Committee brought down Richard Nixon. A similar Senator today - along with the top reporters of today from both The Washington Post and The New York Times...plus first-rate reporters from other news organizations - will get the facts about Donald Trump...whether negative...or positive.
But Donald Trump is self-destructive. His tweets and his tongue will destroy him and his presidency. Trump's mental status is in question and it has been for two years. His narcissism will be his demise politically...and the so-called "Donald Trump brand" (in business) could end up taking a fatal fall.
Time will tell what ultimately will happen. But I wrote in a column many months ago - shortly after the election - that Donald Trump will not last in The White House for four years. And I still believe that will be true.

I don’t know you, so I won’t say you are a hater but many of your columns are very hateful. You may claim you are willing to compromise but reading your columns I would say you are only willing if you get what you want, that’s not compromise, especially when your side lost. The shooting at the baseball field was not a gun control issue that is a fact; Hodgkinson had the weapons for a long time. How long of a waiting period should there be? He also passed a background check, could we do better, maybe but violating the 2nd amendment isn’t the way. The media is out to get the President; you won’t even call him President Trump. You claim that it is because the President lies, they all lie, Clinton lied, President Obama lied remember you can keep your doctor, you can keep your plan all lies. Where do you get the “fact” that the President is under criminal investigation? It is a witch hunt, he beat Hillary and the left and their followers the “mainstream media” can’t get over it. He will not resign, he will not be impeached. I don’t believe he or his campaign did anything illegal. In the future please show your respect for the office and call him President Trump, if you are an American (I believe you are, miss guided but an American), he is your President!
ReplyDeleteMy response to the above reader's comments will be in two parts.
DeletePART ONE OF TWO
When you and other Republicans get it through your heads that the opposition to Donald Trump has absolutely nothing to do with Hillary Clinton not winning the election...you'll all be better off.
As for your claim that the shooting at the baseball field "was not a gun control issue"...I completely disagree with you. Court records show that gunman James Hodgkinson had legal troubles going back to the 1990s and he had a history of violence. This is not a person who the state of Illinois should have ever approved a firearms permit. When there were various issues with law enforcement, Hodgkinson should have had his permit revoked and he should have been given a court order to have his guns turned in to the police. So for you to say that he "passed a background check" is irrelevant, when years following that background check, his permit and guns should have been taken away from him.
Investigation for obstruction of justice is a criminal investigation. There is NO "witch hunt" against Donald Trump. Americans MUST know conclusively that the President of the United States was or was not involved in any collusion with the Russians, which 17 U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia did, in fact, interfere with our election. Whether Trump or anyone in his campaign colluded to affect the outcome of the election MUST be determined without question. However, Trump's interview with NBC News chief anchor Lester Holt is evidence that Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey because of the Russia investigation. And by doing so...by firing the lead investigator of a probe that involves - even in the smallest of ways - Donald Trump - is indeed obstruction of justice.
I have never stated that Donald Trump should be impeached or that he should resign. I have always been clear that if there is enough evidence through either the Special Counsel's investigation, or the House of Representative's investigation, or one of the two Senate investigations, or by any other investigation by the FBI and/or the Department of Justice, which provides enough proof that Trump committed a crime...then and only then should he be impeached and removed from office. But I don't believe that Trump would ever let it go that far. As Richard Nixon did, once the handwriting was on the wall (so to speak), Nixon realized he had no chance of surviving a House impeachment and a Senate conviction so, therefore, he resigned instead. That is what Donald Trump would do if it seemed apparent that he was going to be impeached. Trump will not put up with having to face an impeachment hearing. And like President Ford with Nixon...Mike Pence (once President) would give a full pardon to Trump so that America's second "long national nightmare" (to quote President Ford) would end.
