No green light from Congress means Donald Trump's military strike on Syria was "unlawful." That's the word from Hillary Clinton's 2016 Vice Presidential running mate. Senator Tim Kaine says..."(Syrian President Bashar al-) Assad is a brutal dictator who must be held accountable for his actions." But a 7th grade history student knows that the Virginia Democrat is one-hundred-percent correct with the following. "The Constitution says war must be declared by Congress. (Donald Trump's) failure to seek Congressional approval is unlawful."
I absolutely agree with Senator Kaine. As a Jew, especially...I strenuously object to the sickening slaughter of innocent men, women and children. The world must never, ever witness any deaths that are reminiscent of The Holocaust...even if it's a fraction of the amount of people who were killed in Nazi Germany. The heinous poisoning of powerless children and defenseless babies - not to mention adults - by what might have been sarin nerve gas...is beyond horrific. And I in no way feel that Syria...and the regime of Assad...should be allowed to get away with such atrociously gruesome murders. But Donald Trump is a loose cannon. He is too impulsive. He does not think things through carefully and thoroughly. Americans have noticed that with every off-the-cuff remark and tweet throughout his Presidential campaign and over his first eleven weeks in The White House.
On Thursday night, April 6th, 2017, Trump ordered a military strike on Syria. The Pentagon says two U.S. warships in the Mediterranean Sea launched 59 tomahawk missiles on an airfield in the northwestern part of the country. It's where the United States believes Assad dropped chemical weapons, at dawn on Tuesday, April 4th. The carnage killed at least seventy people with another one-hundred or more being treated in hospitals...some of those victims in critical condition.
American military strikes need to be discussed and approved by Congress. Even Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky - prior to the strike in Syria - stated that if Trump used military action it would be "illegal and unconstitutional" if he did it without Congressional approval. And although The Pentagon says the intent of the U.S. mission was not to target people...that doesn't mean nobody perished in the attack. However...as this column is being published, there is no report of any deaths. But who's to say that the next time, Trump won't order a military raid that unknowingly...or even knowingly, for that matter...kills moms and dads who are tucking their kids under the covers or reading them a bedtime story. Casualties of war...collateral damage...is never acceptable when the victims are children.
The "proportional" response - as the Trump Administration called the strike on Syria - echoed language used by Michael Douglas and Martin Sheen in Aaron Sorkin's 1995 motion picture screenplay, The American President. And although, so far, no innocent individuals are known to have lost their lives by the U.S. action in Syria... they could have...they may have. Directed by Rob Reiner, there was a scene in The American President movie where the President ordered an attack on a foreign nation where "a janitor" who was working on "the night shift" was going to be blown up by the U.S. military strike. That was fiction. But who knows? Perhaps a real-life janitor in Syria...somebody who had nothing to do with Assad or his brutal assault... somebody who has children of his own...somebody who has a mother and father who love him...might have been fatally wounded by this..."proportional" response.
In remarks made Thursday night after the military action, Donald Trump spoke to the nation from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. "Assad choked out the lives of helpless men, women and children." And "It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons." The Defense Department says it appears that the Syrian airfield was severely damaged, thus the attack probably reduced the amount of chemical weapons in Assad's arsenal...and, therefore...it will hinder...or perhaps stop the use of such dangerous toxic gas.
But Donald Trump must not be allowed to fire missiles on...or bomb...other countries on a whim. He does not have the authority to act on his own without Congressional approval. Trump must obey the laws of our land. He must obey the United States Constitution.
We as a nation...and we as a planet...cannot afford to risk the possibility of a full-scale, major combat campaign with other countries around the globe. There will never be World War III. It will simply be called...The End Of The World.

What President Trump ordered last night was fully within his authority as Commander-in-Chief. The Constitution grants Congress with the power to declare war, this was not a declaration of war. The Commander-in-Chief determines when and how to use our military. Even the War Powers Act, which has not been fully tested in the courts says the President/ Commander-in-Chief must notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and forbids armed forces from remaining for more than 60 days, with a further 30-day withdrawal period, without a Congressional authorization for use of military force (AUMF) or a declaration of war by the United States. There is NO requirement to notify Congress or get approval before the Commander-in-Chief acts. You and Senator Kane need to go back to 7th grade. President Clinton did the same with air strikes in Iraq and the deployment of peacekeeping forces in Bosnia and Kosovo. Presidents Reagan, Bush41, Clinton, Bush 43 even President Carter committed US military forces without notifying Congress or getting their consent. President Carter didn’t notify Congress until after the failed attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran. Where do you get the idea that “American military strikes need to be discussed and approved by Congress” we have one Commander-in-Chief not 535 of them, there is no law that requires a President to get Congressional approval to protect America, its citizens, its national interest or its allies. If this was Obama you would be cheering but since it is President Trump, you feel he is not the Commander-in-Chief, how partisan can you be? Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said Friday that President Trump had the legal authority to launch a missile attack at a Syrian airfield Thursday night, because it was a limited attack that fell short of a full declaration of war. "He was dealing with exigent circumstances, and as the commander in chief, not only does he have the right, he has an obligation to act," Rubio said. This was not a “whim” this was a well-planned attack by our Navy. The President does not need to go to Congress first, requiring that, you might as well have your plans printed on the front page of the New York Times; the Congress is a giant sieve and would leak the information. You and the left are upset that we finally have a President willing to stand up against Assad, Iran and Russia for these acts. God knows the last President wouldn’t even standup to his own “redline in the sand”, instead he cowered in the corner and let Assad kill thousands. As for your World War III comment, the best way to avoid war is with a super strong military, a President willing to act and the world knowing it. PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH! President Obama depleted our military and was afraid to act. Obama’s action or in many cases inaction is what has emboldened Assad, Kim Jong Un and even Putin, it is time for America to stand up again and be strong!
ReplyDeleteMy column stands. Democrats not only say that what Donald Trump did was not Constitutional without Congressional authorization, but some Republicans have stated the same, as I noted in my commentary above. Again, my column stands. GBD
DeleteYour column and you can stand on your head, it doesn't make it correct. Read the War Powers Act, read the Constitution. Please find anywhere that the Commander-in-Chief needs Congressional approval? The Constitution only says that the power to DECLARE WAR belongs to the Congress, President Trump did not declare war he used his power as Commander-in-Chief! So did Carter, Reagan, both Bush Presidents,Clinton and many many before them. Once again this shows your partisan attitude. For once be just be an America and not a partisan Democrat America!
ReplyDeleteMy column stands. GBD
DeleteOnce again you can’t defend your inaccurate statements or your lies. Just as side note “WELCOME JUSTICE GORSUCH”!
ReplyDeleteMy defense is my column...which is jampacked with accurate statements. No lies. Oh yes...just as a side note...start counting the days for November 2018 when the Democrats will be voted in to re-take control of both the Senate and House of Representatives. Start counting the days until November 2020 when a Democrat wins The White House. And start counting the days when Donald Trump is impeached, convicted and removed from office. More will be coming out about Russia. Bet on it. GBD
DeleteThey may be your opinions but they are not accurate or facts. Oh yes on a side note shouldn’t you be counting the days until they start talking indictments against Susan Rice for illegally unmasking Americans for political reason and getting her to cut a deal not to go to jail by admitting who ordered her to do it. Does the name Barack Obama sound correct? Who on Obama’s team goes to jail first, that’s the question?
DeleteFirst of all, some of my comments are my own "opinions" - yes...but those "opinions" are all based on "facts." And when you read my new column - to be published in the coming week - you will see where everything I stated in my above column is justified and documented more fully. You will not be able to deny those facts either.
DeleteAs for Susan Rice...I'm falling on the floor with laughter by your remark. Rice did absolutely nothing illegal. If you read my column of April 5th, 2017 titled, WHILE TRUMP CONSPIRACIES CONTINUE, KREMLIN CRONIES CACKLE, you will realize I am correct.
You truly must be a hater of Democrats, liberals, progressives and anybody by the name Obama or Clinton. I'm literally laughing up a storm that you think anybody from the Obama Administration would ever be indicted, let alone go to jail. Yeah...you're a hater.
