It's Wednesday, January 18th, 2017...and I'm waiting for the spirit of the late Rod Serling...to appear at the front door of my house...to tell me I'm in...The Twilight Zone.
For eight years...millions of Americans all across the country - especially me - were sure that on January 20th, 2017...Hillary Clinton would be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. Regrettably, I have spent the last ten weeks making a tremendous effort to accept the disturbing outcome of the 2016 election.
Unlike any election from years past - when my candidate did not win - although I was disappointed, I was not heartbroken. I was not grief-stricken. I did not cry. But this time...I was painfully devastated, to say the least.
I spent more than a year - in my own small way - writing columns...and trying to convince anybody and everybody...that Hillary Clinton would - without question - be an excellent President who would continue the forward
direction that
President Barack Obama has taken our country since he moved in to The White House on January 20th, 2009.
But Americans living in states that total 306 electoral votes... had other ideas. So, therefore... less than 48 hours from the time this column is published...Hillary Clinton - with grace and dignity... and most likely holding hands with
President Bill Clinton - will take her seat on the Inauguration platform at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, DC. Mrs. Clinton will undoubtedly be thinking to herself - as 65-million citizens who cast their ballots for her will be thinking - it wasn't supposed to happen this way.
Every person acknowledges tragedy...sadness...or disappointment...at different times and in different ways. The Electoral College loss...by the former Secretary of State...has taken awhile to sink in for some Democrats and other Hillary Clinton voters. As for others - just two days before the inauguration of someone other than Mrs. Clinton - the reality has still not sunk in.
And although Secretary Clinton obviously realizes that she will not take the Presidential oath of office...I can only imagine the gloomy and woeful thoughts that are regurgitating throughout her mind...as we near the moment when someone besides her...will put his left hand on the bible...raise his right hand...and repeat the 39 solemn words that will be administered by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
Accordingly...I don't know how Mrs. Clinton will hold back the tears at 12 noon this Friday. But she will. Because Hillary Clinton is an American patriot. She has honorably served our country. And she is a tower of strength who radiates class and dignity. That being said...although Secretary Clinton will be unable to express her emotions at the aforementioned hour...others...including myself...who genuinely feel deep, true affection for this great lady...and who were so certain that she would become America's first woman President...will be weeping from our eyes.
But Hillary Clinton wouldn't be human...if - at some point after the inauguration - she didn't fall apart in her husband's arms...and sob.
I would bet that Mrs. Clinton has already had her share of sorrowful outbursts since the night of November 8th, 2016. But Secretary Clinton is a trooper. She is a champion...in more ways than one. And she will continue to use her strong voice...to speak out...on behalf of liberal and progressive Democrats nationwide...and on behalf of...ALL Americans. Hillary Clinton will be back... and on top. Perhaps not as President and Commander-In-Chief...but who knows? Don't count her out just yet. She may surprise everyone and take on that challenge again. If not...Mrs. Clinton will indeed remain an active part...of doing whatever she can...to help others...and to make America better and better.
After all...as President Obama articulated so perfectly in his final news conference earlier today... "The only thing that is the end of the world...is the end of the world."
Hillary Clinton cannot mope. And she won't. And neither should we.
And that's The Controversy for today.

Hillary deserves to rest. America has abused her repeatedly, and like many victims, she keeps coming back. Because she loves America.
ReplyDeleteThat never works out well.
I agree with you, Patricia, that Secretary Clinton deserves to get some "rest." I also agree with you that she has been "abused" repeatedly and that she "keeps coming back." I like to think of Hillary Clinton as "The Energizer Bunny." She "keeps going and going." And yes, "because she loves America." But I will say to not rule out her coming back again. As I noted in my column, perhaps not as a Presidential candidate, but in some other way to help our country. And she will be great. Who knows though? Hillary Clinton may try for that top spot in 2020. I doubt it. But let's just say that I wouldn't be shocked if she does. GBD

ReplyDeleteI always have been, Trish. And Trish...I'm not "sorry for that" at all. I'm very proud of being "to the left" as a patriotic and liberal progressive Democrat. GBD
