I need to get something off my chest or I will bust.

The identity of the person is not important to this column, but as I have written in the past, it was June 2015 when - during a conversation with this individual - I labeled Donald Trump..."a superstar."  But I wanted to tell this person something else...that now, 18 months later...I don't expect some...or even all of you...to believe.  And I'm sure that the person I was talking with a year and a half ago will surely not take me at my word.  Anyway, the aforementioned party - whose gender I will also not reveal - asked me..."You really don't think Trump could ever win...do you?"

The odds of Donald Trump ever becoming President were so far-fetched that I went against my better judgment and instead of telling this person how I really felt - which is what I wanted to do...which I really should have done...and which I wrote in my personal notes - I reacted with..."No.  I don't think so."

The truth is...I did indeed think Trump could win.  Well...I thought that way on one particular day in June of last year...because - for the moment - I had a gut feeling that Trump's "super-stardom" could change the way people look at politics.  Trump's original racist remark - when he announced his candidacy on June 16th, 2015 - was beyond hateful towards Mexicans who come across our southern border.  But I figured there is so much bigotry in the United States against Latinos - and other minorities - oh yes there is - that when Trump insisted that "They're bringing drugs...they're bringing crime...they're rapists"...that even though his sentence was horrendous...I was concerned that a single statement...full of prejudice...would not by itself kill Trump's campaign...as it was barely underway.  I knew there were Americans whose mindset was in step with Trump...and that one appalling comment would probably not affect him too much with certain votersHowever...each time he opened up his mouth...and from his tongue shot a bullet in his foot...I thought the real estate mogul would do himself in...and his campaign for President would be over.  I never - but for that one moment - imagined Trump getting the Republican nomination, let alone the Presidency.

When he continued to spew venomous verbiage - week after week...month after month - I was certain that a fork could be stuck in Donald Trump...and he would be done.  But I was wrong.  Ohhhh...was I wrong.  And so were 65-million-844-thousand-610 people who voted for Hillary Clinton.  Plus...I speak for practically every journalist who writes a column...nearly all the newspapers and magazines that are published...most every commentator, analyst and pundit on cable, satellite and broadcast television and radio news programs...in other words, in every form of media...we blew it.

In no particular order, I will remind everyone of Donald Trump's obscene and reprehensible behavior throughout Campaign 2016.  But no matter how offensive he got...Trump thrived with voters.  I even wrote a column - on March 28th, 2016 - titled...Donald Trump: The Limbo Man...and I asked..."How low can he go?"  Pretty damn low.

When Trump disrespected Gold Star parents Khizr and Ghazala Khan, I was positive that the billionaire businessman would be forced out.

When Trump belittled Senator John McCain...saying the Arizona Republican - when a Vietnam prisoner of war - was "not a hero"...I noted it would be impossible for anyone to support him.

I was astounded...even baffled...when so many of the GOP candidates... continued to put up with Trump's despicable bullying...and that nobody had "the marbles" - dare I say, "the balls"...to speak out against him.  From "Little Marco" Rubio to "Low Energy Jeb" Bush...from his attempt to connect Ted Cruz's father with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy to basically calling the Texas senator's wife ugly...and to also telling Carly Fiorina that her "face" is not one that is good looking enough to be President...I waited and waited and waited...for one of Trump's Republican challengers to pummel him...either with their words...or, quite frankly, with their fists.  Yes, there were reactions by Trump's contenders...but they did not hit back as hard as Trump.

Trump blasted Ben Carson, Rick Perry and the Speaker of the House Paul Ryan... yet now they seem to have all kissed and made up.  Even Reince Priebus - as Republican National Committee chairman - was bombarded with viciousness by Trump during the campaign...yet now he's set to be the incoming White House Chief of Staff.  How on Earth do these people look at themselves in the mirror?

Trump disparaged Muslims with his ban to keep those of that religious belief out of our country.  He made rude remarks about African-Americans.  And he used an advertisement...with an image of a Star of David...that insulted Jews.  Still many people who fall in to those categories...actually voted for Trump.

When Donald Trump mocked a disabled reporter...when he crudely attacked a federal judge because of his Hispanic heritage...when he was verbally abusive towards FOX News anchor Megyn Kelly, indicating that she was angry with him during a debate that "you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes...blood coming out of her wherever"...and when he degraded Alicia Machado by calling the former Miss Universe..."Miss Piggy" - because he claimed she had gained some weight...and "Miss Housekeeping" - because she is Latina...each and every time that Trump bashed someone...I was sure that Republican voters would crush him like a bug.  But it didn't happen.

On September 29th, 2016...I published a commentary titled, No Woman Should Vote For Donald Trump.  And that was more than a week before the Access Hollywood video hit the fan.  After that...there was no doubt in my mind that Trump's goose was cooked.  I was absolutely sure that virtually no woman would ever cast her ballot for Trump after he bragged about being a "sexual predator" - to echo Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada - and a "sexual assault(er)" - to quote Vice President Joe Biden...but again...we - in the media - not to mention all Democrats... didn't realize how we could be so off track with GOP voters.  For whatever the reason...Republicans...and some conservative Independents...didn't care about the so-called..."locker room talk."  They didn't care that Trump used the word "p---y"... saying it was okay to "grab" it...because he was a celebrity.  They didn't care that Trump shouted out the word..."f--k"...in front of children at a rally.  I can only wonder what kind of filthy, dirty language is being taught by parents - or at least allowed to be spoken by their kids - in the homes of voters who accepted Trump's foul mouth.

When protesters tried to disrupt his campaign rallies...we heard Trump utter such unpresidential, threatening phrases as..."knock the crap out of them"...and..."I'd like to punch him in the face."  Such vulgar and vile vocabulary only confirmed what I wrote in a commentary...which goes back to December 19th, 2015...when I tagged Trump a warped maniac...and compared his dictatorial demeanor to that of Adolf Hitler.  And that was seven months before Senator Bernie Sanders tweeted - during Trump's July 21st acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio - "Is this guy running for President or dictator?"

And now...Donald Trump is assembling an Administration that is filled with billionaires and multi-millionaires...who already seem to be more concerned about cutting taxes for the rich...instead of raising the minimum wage and reducing taxes for the middle-class and the poor.

Since that December 2015 column, noted above, I have been writing that Trump is dangerous...and that he should be paralleled to a madman.  I wrote - long before it was customary by others to state it - that Donald Trump is unfit to be President of the United States.  And on Thursday, December 22nd, 2016...one year after I first referred to Trump - in so many words - as not having the temperament to be the leader of our country...he tweeted that "The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes."  To want more nuclear weapons is a desire that no U.S. President has called for in decades.  Every American President since Ronald Reagan...has made efforts to shrink our nation's atomic stockpile.

Let us remember that in an interview with MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews - in March 2016 - Donald Trump insisted that he would never take "anything off the table" when it comes to using nuclear weapons...whether in the Middle East, Europe or anywhere else.  Trump also told Matthews..."Would there be a time for it to be used?  Possibly."

Donald Trump is frightening...and he is diabolically deviant.  When 50 national security experts - most of them Republicans - signed a letter in August 2016... opposing Trump...and declaring that he "would be the most reckless President in American history"...they knew what they were saying.  Trump is proving to be treacherous...even before he takes the oath of office.

I have expressed since November 9th - 24 hours after Election Day - that Democrats need to count down the days to the 2020 election...and that liberals and progressives must find a candidate who will defeat Donald Trump...that is if he even lasts four years in The White House before a scandal destroys his Presidency.  But now...with Trump's eagerness...or perhaps even his craving...to enlarge our nuclear arsenal...and ultimately put our country...our citizens...and our world...in harm's way...who knows what might be in four years?  Trump has promised to "shake things up."  He may shake things up so much that there'll be nothing left to shake.  With Donald Trump as President...four years from now there may not be a need for a 2020 election.  Our planetary population may be nothing...but dust.

And that's The Controversy for today.
