FIRST LADY...THEN SENATOR...THEN PRESIDENT MICHELLE OBAMA

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column below my photograph.  Thank you.

There's an old saying that... "Behind every great man...is a great woman."  Since I'm an ultra progressive liberal Democrat who strongly supports LGBT rights and the rights of ALL people...then with due respect to whomever first spoke or wrote those words - which nobody really knows - I am amending that proverb to say that..."Behind every great person...is another great person."  The gender is irrelevant.

But either way you accept the expression...it is applicable in the partnership of Barack and Michelle Obama.

The First Lady is indubitably the "great woman" behind the "great man"...and, in this case... the great President.  Mrs. Obama proved it to us at the 2016 Democratic National Convention this past summer...and she did it again on Thursday, October 13th in Manchester, New Hampshire... when in a sizzling speech, the First Lady condemned Donald Trump over allegations of sexual misconduct.  Numerous women have come forward...and charged the Republican

nominee of unspeakable acts throughout the course of the last 30 years.  And Mrs. Obama powerfully articulated that "No woman deserves to be treated this way."  An intensely emotional First Lady...expressed to voters attending a campaign event for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton...that "It has shaken me to my core in a way that I couldn't have predicted.  If all of this is painful to us as grown women...what do you think this is doing to our children?"  Mrs. Obama's blistering remarks are the icing on the cake in the destruction of Trump's campaign for President.  If the real estate mogul had even a sliver of a chance at winning the November 8th election - which I don't believe he ever had - then Mrs. Obama's words...effectively excoriated Trump...to the point that he couldn't get elected national dog catcher.

After a spectacular July 25th address at the Democratic convention...and now with a fiery and impassioned attack on the offensive behavior of Donald Trump... those are just two of the reasons why I recommend...advise...and encourage Michelle Obama...to run for a seat in the United States Senate.

There are those of you who might say..."Who is Duglin to give advice to Michelle Obama?"  Well, I'll tell you...as you continue to read this column.

President and Mrs. Obama - the caring, thoughtful and unselfish parents that they are - have shared with Americans in recent months... that when they move from The White House on January 20th, 2017...Washington, DC will remain their home - albeit in a private dwelling - at least for a couple of

years...so that their 15-year old daughter, Sasha, can continue her education at the same high school she's been attending.  College- bound daughter, Malia - now 18 - is taking a year off, but will start as a Harvard University freshmen come the 2017 fall semester.

But as soon as Sasha receives her diploma...and she is set to head off to college...it is my hope that Mr. and Mrs. Obama will take up residence in a state where the First Lady has the opportunity to campaign...and win...in a U.S. Senate election.  And should Mrs. Obama decide to enter politics as a candidate herself...some of you may accuse the First Lady of being a copycat of Hillary ClintonDon't.

With her first victory in November 2020...Michelle Obama could serve two six-year terms on Capitol Hill...and - in 2032 - at age 68...Mrs. Obama could seek and undoubtedly defeat any challengers for the Democratic nomination for President.  Another President Obama?  Come November 2032 (or actually, January 2033)...you betcha!

But "first things first"...so says another familiar phrase.  Both President and Mrs. Obama have a lot on their agendas to accomplish throughout the next three months...including doing what they can to help Hillary Clinton be elected the 45th President of the United States.

As an American...my counsel to Michelle Obama...is as valuable as any American.  It's merely a personal opinion about a patriotic person who has demonstrated integrity, knowledge, strength, wit, humor and compassion as First Lady.  My guidance is simply a sincere suggestion to someone who I believe could lead our country with a vision of always moving our nation forward.  After all...others have sat behind The Oval Office desk with much less qualifications.

In 2007...Mrs. Obama was not overly enthusiastic about her husband taking the plunge in to the pool of Presidential politics.  And after Mr. Obama won his first term in 2008...the First Lady was reportedly not excited about making public appearances and being out front of an audience of American electorates.  Nevertheless...Mrs. Obama has excelled in the role of First Lady.  Despite the fact that she refused an office in The West Wing...Mrs. Obama has given her heart and soul to help military families and to fight against childhood obesity.  Otherwise...I'm guessing that her thinking was...that one star in the family was enough...so she wanted to avoid the spotlight.  But those days are long gone.  The Obamas are indeed a two-star family.

"Anybody can grow up to be President of the United States."  Every kid is told that, at some point, during their childhood.  And we realized the truth of those words when Barack Obama became our first African-American President.  And a little more than 23 days from the time this commentary is published...

Hillary Clinton is likely to be elected America's first woman President.  We have broken the ceiling.  No decent American should care whether our President is male or female...white or black...of Latino or Asian heritage...Jewish...or any other characterization.  But does First Lady Obama want to be President?

In a June 2016 interview with Oprah Winfrey...Michelle Obama noted that she's actually looking forward to leaving The White House.  "I want to walk down the street.  I want to sit in a yard that is not a national park.  I want to go to Target again."  And several months before...while at a town hall meeting in Baton Rouge,

Louisiana...President Obama answered a citizen who asked if America could "talk the First Lady in to running for President."  Mr. Obama was definite with his response.  "There are three things that are certain in life...death...
taxes...and Michelle is not running for President."  But, of his wife, President Obama boasted on Friday, October 14th...following her speech the day before when she criticized Donald Trump..."I could not be prouder of her."

Mrs. Obama has wowed our nation as First Lady.  In my August 16th, 2016 column, I wrote that "First Lady Michelle Obama is first in so many ways...and that she herself represents the beauty of all women...the beauty of the heart."  Mrs. Obama is an intelligent and classy lady...and I recognize that both she and President Obama have said time and time again that the First Lady does not want to be President and that politics is not an avenue she wants to travel.  But America would be proud to call Michelle Obama...Madam President.  Hey...people do change their minds.

And that's The Controversy for today.

  1. GBD, I would agree with you that behind most great men is a great woman or person in today’s politically correct world. The problem I have to start with is your claim that President Obama is a great man. I am only talking politically not personally, I don’t know him personally so I will only talk politically, and he is not a great man or a great leader. As for Michelle Obama this is a woman who 8 years ago said that she had never in her adult life been proud of America. She may be a very nice person; I don’t know her so I can’t say. I can say I don’t believe she is a proud American or that she respects and honors the US Constitution and therefore even if I agreed with her politics, which I don’t, I wouldn’t want someone with her disdain for America and Americans to ever be President!

  2. Here is what First Lady Michelle Obama actually said...and meant. The following was published by the Website TruthorFiction.com.

It was during speeches in Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin on February 18, 2008.

In Milwaukee, (Mrs. Obama) said, “People in this country are ready for change and hungry for a different kind of politics and … for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.”

In Madison, (the First Lady) said, ““For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country … not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment.”

A spokesperson for the Obama Campaign, (Communications Director Jennifer Psaki), said Michelle Obama was not trying to knock her country but rather to “underscore the meaning behind her husband’s campaign.” She added, “The point is that of course Michelle is proud of her country, which is why she and Barack talk constantly about how their story wouldn’t be possible in any other nation on Earth. What she meant is that she’s really proud at this moment because for the first time in a long time, thousands of Americans who’ve never participated in politics before are coming out in record numbers to build a grassroots movement for change.”

Now from me...as for President Obama - I stick by my one-line comment in my column that the President is a "great man" and a "great President." But that was not the reason for the above commentary. I wrote the column to compliment Mrs. Obama and to suggest that she run for the U.S. Senate...and then ultimately...hopefully...for the Presidency. For you to say that you "don't believe she is a proud American or that she respects and honors the U.S. Constitution" is ridiculous. Michelle Obama is NOT "someone with disdain for America." Instead...the First Lady loves America. GBD
