REGRETS ARE MEANINGLESS WITHOUT APOLOGIES

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.

He's careless...reckless...dangerous...a fraud...and as phony as a 3-dollar bill.  But Donald Trump wants Americans to believe that he regrets some of the horrendous comments he's made throughout the last year.  At a Thursday, August 18th, 2016 campaign rally in Charlotte, North Carolina...Trump told the nation that "Sometimes...in the heat of debate...and speaking on a multitude of issues...you don't choose the right words...or you say the wrong thing.  I have done that.  And believe it or not...I regret it.  And I do regret it...particularly where it may have caused... personal pain."

But what exactly does Trump regret?  The Republican nominee for President has not elaborated...nor has he specified anything.  In fact...Trump hasn't apologized... and said "I'm sorry"...to any of the individual persons...or to the groups of people... who he has insulted.

For more than 14 months...Donald Trump's verbal abuse has been vulgar and vicious.  He has attacked everyone from Gold Star Parents - whose soldier son was killed in Iraq while performing an heroic act of bravery to save the lives of troops in his command - to a Vietnam War hero turned U.S. Senator.  Trump has offended a federal judge - who happens to be Latino...Mexicans, Muslims, women - including another Republican candidate and a network news anchor...plus a disabled reporter.  And Trump has ruthlessly mistreated many others...and terribly hurt them with his venomously toxic tongue.

Trump Campaign senior adviser, Boris Epshteyn - appearing on the MSNBC program, Politics Nation with Al Sharpton - was asked on Sunday, August 21st...why Trump - during his Charlotte rally - did not express personal apologies to everyone he has pained.  "That wasn't the point of the speech," stated Epshteyn.

     But it should have been.

Epshteyn told Reverend Sharpton that Trump's remarks were focused on discussing national security...law and order...and the economy.

Trump, however, needed to go one-on-one...and actually say, "I'm sorry" - in private...and then in public - to each and every person...and groups of persons...that he has mocked...defamed...or belittled...throughout his time on the campaign trail.  But Trump isn't man enough to do any of that.  Instead...a campaign shake-up last week...resulted in the hiring of a new campaign manager and a campaign CEO.  The billionaire businessman then used the two words that he made famous when he hosted the NBC reality series, The Apprentice.  "You're fired."  But it wasn't a contestant on a television show that was given the boot...it was Trump's campaign chairman, Paul Manafort.

Trump's new advisers have made it known that they "will let Trump be Trump."  Does that mean he will be using more...off-the-cuff, combative strategies?  Will the real estate mogul continue to say whatever comes to mind...no matter how harmful it may be...as he did during the primary season?  Will "let(ting) Trump be Trump"... entice more voters to cast their ballots for him on November 8th?  I don't think so.  Not anymore.

Oh it's true, that I - like millions of Americans - envisioned that each time Trump insulted someone...after each time he opened his mouth with an offensive thought over the course of the last year...Trump was cooking his own goose.  But that bird never baked, broiled or braised.  It is, however, starting to burn to a crisp.

Now...with only 11 weeks until Election Day...I remain more than confident that Hillary Clinton will beat Donald Trump like a drum...and with a landslide victory, the people of our great nation...will vote in the former Secretary of State as our first woman President.  I will, however, agree with Mrs. Clinton that we cannot take anything for granted...but I do have faith in the majority of Americans...that they will not put the next four years...in to the hands of Donald Trump.

Making wild adjustments to his campaign leadership...will not help Trump...to get more Americans to support him.  New senior staffers aren't going to be enough...to convince voters...that he is someone who should be occupying The Oval Office.  We must prevent the Trump Plaza marquee from being posted atop The White House.

No matter what Donald Trump now says...or does...he needed to apologize...long time ago...for every single controversial and despicable statement he has uttered since June 16th, 2015.

Regrets are meaningless...without saying...and truly meaning, "I'm sorry."  But that would be the decent thing to do.  The bottom line...Donald doesn't do decent.

And that's The Controversy for today.

     I'm Gary B. Duglin.

  1. I must ask you why the double standard, while I would agree there are some who Trump should apologize to but not as many as you would say I’m sure. We need to protect our boarder, build a wall, and uphold our laws which means deport those who came here illegally. We should not accept any refugees from any country that could be infiltrated by ISIS, as Director Comey has stated, there is no way to fully vet any of them. The list of what Trump has proposed that is 100% on target is too long to repeat here and is not the point of my response, why the double standard? You never question Hillary Clinton, a known liar, she has lied about her emails, lied about Benghazi, lied about being shot at in Bosnia, lied about Colin Powell, the list goes on and on. She told the world she turned over all her emails and now they find 15,000 new ones. She is corrupt, she ran a “pay for play” scheme at the State Dept., 10’s of millions if not 100’s of millions of dollars paid to her, her husband and their foundation for special access and special privileges. As former US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, former Mayor of NYC Giuliani has said it is time for a RICO investigation. This will never happen because she is fully protected by the Obama administration, even the FBI has been told to stand down by the Attorney General and not to investigate the Clinton foundation. Shouldn’t Clinton apologize to the Benghazi families she lied to, shouldn’t she apologize for the lies to America about her emails, shouldn’t she apologize to Colin Powell for her lies about him, the list goes on and on, but I’m sure you get my point. So I ask again why the double standard?

    1. There is no "double standard" because there is no proof of anything you have stated. There is no evidence to support any comment you have made above. The fact of the matter is...Hillary Clinton has not knowingly lied about anything you have noted in your remarks. GBD

    2. Nonsense. She never lied about Powell - he was pushed to say that by misquoting what SHE had said. She has been 100% exonerated of the stupid 'pay to play' charge since emails showed she never gave anything to anyone. She never lied about classified info since Comey said UNDER OATH to Cummings that not one single email was marked classified at the time. Re-evaluation AFTER the fact when she was out of office is NOT her responsibility. COMEY said that - and nobody much reported it. As far a immigration - you and we are all here because there were NO screening standards. All of our forebears entered without any requirements at all. And MY forebears, Mayflower descendants, didn't want you here. They were sure you'd corrupt the culture and bring massive dysfunction and crimes. Well they were wrong then, we all are wrong NOW. We can regularize immigration, but we need new "Ellis" and "Angel" islands to do that. WE changed the laws. The immigrants today are just the same.

    3. Thank you, Churchlady320 for your comment. Obviously you are responding to the remarks made by the Anonymous reader above who wrote on August 23, 2016 at 7:08 AM and not my reply to that person. That being said...you are 100% correct about what FBI Director James Comey testified under oath. But Republicans are putting their own spin on issues and, therefore, trying to make their opinions to be facts. Republicans' opinions are not facts...and their opinions are nowhere near the truth. And yes, America is a land that should provide a "welcome"...not a "wall." GBD

  2. The only thing I stated that has not been proven is the RICO charges, which I believe would be proven if the Obama Administration would allow an investigation, but it won’t. It is a fact she lied about turning over all her emails, they just found 15,000 more. She lied to 2 mothers about why their sons died in Benghazi, a federal lawsuit is pending. She lied about Colin Powell and tried using his words to “her people are trying to pin it on me" check CNN. She lied about Bosnia, the pilot and crew said it never happened. The list goes on and on. As I said why the double standard ?

    1. Your accusations are unfounded and meaningless. There is no "double standard" because there is no proof or evidence of any kind that Hillary Clinton has ever knowingly lied about anything. You can make up whatever list you want, but your list is always going to be filled with falsehoods that are concocted and fabricated by Republicans like you who will do anything you possibly can to defame a wonderful public servant - Hillary Clinton - who will be an outstanding President of the United States. 2. Balderdash. Facts show she did no such thing.

  3. These are not accusations they are fact: Did she or did she not say she turned over all work related emails? Where did these 15,000 new ones come from? Did she or did she not tell the story about being under fire when landing in Bosnia? The crew says it never happened. Did she or did she not say that Colin Powell suggested her using a private email server? He has said that conversation never happened. Did she or did she not tell mothers on the tarmac that their sons died because of an internet video? The mothers and others say she did and it was a lie and they have filed a federal lawsuit against her. Those are all FACTS none that have been “concocted and fabricated” as Joe Friday always said “just the facts”. You have a double standard as does the mainstream media and none of you have the guts to admit it.

    1. There is nothing to "admit." There are no "guts" that are needed. You have no "facts." I will once again use the line I have used in the past...that you and other Republicans are continuing to "spew your venom" but you have no proof or evidence of anything. Your allegations don't hold water. Hillary Clinton did not knowingly lie about anything. Enough of this now. I'm done discussing this matter with you as we are going round and round in circles and nothing is going to change if we were to continue. So let's not. GBD

    2. The 15,000 were personal. She went to Bosnia while the helicopters ahead of her HAD been under fire and war was raging around. Her specific copter was not, but can you not appreciate the CLIMATE of fear that attended that landing? She did not say Powell SUGGESTED it but that he had discussed how he DID use a private server and why. He chickened out later but he has said publicly they discussed it. The ONE mother who is angry had NO relationship with Stevens - he detested her racist views - and is capitalizing on it. And yes the video played a role since the local militants used the OTHER riots occurring those days about the video to whip up the attack on the Embassy outpost. She never lied - it WAS true. And Stevens' family along with ALL the others stand by Sec'y Clinton in her work with them.

Obviously you are responding to the remarks made by the Anonymous reader above who wrote on August 23, 2016 at 10:35 AM and not my reply to that person. That being said...Republicans have tried to change facts around with everything concerning Hillary Clinton. Donald Trump and the GOP will do anything they think they can - including lying - in their attempt to sway voters not to cast their ballots for Secretary Clinton. But I don't think it's going to work. Mrs. Clinton is going to crush Trump on November 8th...like the bug he is. GBD
