Although it's been 19 days since the end of the Democratic National Convention, this commentary - which, for the most part, was written to be published immediately following the convention's conclusion - needed to be postponed because of Republican nominee Donald Trump's abhorrent behavior over the last three weeks, thus the topics of my editorials during that period of time. And now...most Americans are probably paying more attention to the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil than the upcoming Presidential election. Therefore...before one of the best political conventions in American history fades in the memories of Democratic, Independent and yes, Republican voters too...I want to remind everyone how stellar the Democrats' convention was for Hillary Clinton...for her running mate, Tim Kaine...for both President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama...for former President Bill Clinton...for Vice President Joe Biden...for others in the Democratic Party...and for the future of all Americans.
Describing the Democratic National Convention can be accomplished with one word. Wow! The forum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was the epitome of perfection...and that is exactly how a political convention is supposed to be.
Beginning with Day One on Monday, July 25th, 2016....through Day Four on Thursday, July 28th...the Democrats threw a spectacular party that combined politics with an open love of country...and then added a splash of show-biz...a sprinkle of entertainment...and a whole lot of important and noteworthy information. It was a convention to beat all conventions...the pinnacle of conventions...a convention for the ages.
Democrats are patriotic people. And if anyone ever doubted it before...then there's no way that impression can be thought of today. The Democratic Convention was jam-packed with an exuberant enthusiasm for the United States...and an effervescent exhibition of heartfelt affection for our nation...for our people...and for our flag.
Men and women...boys and girls...were visibly proud...as they clutched and elevated placards of patriotism...while shouting, "U.S.A., U.S.A.". Delegates whose eyes were bursting with tears...coupled with smiles of happiness...displayed a warm and fuzzy demonstration of pumped-up celebration and indisputable allegiance to our country. It was a love-fest.
Hillary Clinton accepted her history-making nomination as the first woman to run on a major political party's ticket for President of the United States. "I'm with her"...and everyone in America needs to be with Mrs. Clinton on November 8th...in order to elect this former Secretary of State, the 45th President of our great nation. And yes...despite what Donald Trump thinks...we are already great...have always been great...and will be even greater with Hillary Clinton as our President and Commander-In-Chief.
When I had originally composed this editorial, my intention was not to criticize Donald Trump. In fact, I had planned to make a valiant effort not to speak ill of Mr. Trump in any future columns. I wanted to oblige President Obama and accommodate his request to convention delegates on Wednesday, July 27th...when they were uttering jeers against the billionaire businessman and the President said..."Don't boo. Vote." Secretary Clinton echoed Mr. Obama's sentiment during her speech on Thursday, July 28th. But due to Trump's repugnant, repulsive and reprehensible rhetoric since the Democratic Convention...I felt it necessary - during my August commentaries - to further speak my mind about Donald Trump...as President Obama has done this month too.
Meanwhile, contrary to the Republicans...Democrats now stand united. No Democrat who was asked to take part in the convention...declined. Democratic dignitaries attended the convention...unlike the GOP where two former Presidents were among the many Republican politicians who refused to show any solidarity for their party's nominee. Not even the host state's chief executive - Ohio Governor John Kasich - wanted to make an appearance in support of Donald Trump. But at the Democratic Convention...Hillary Clinton's challenger - Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders - graciously expressed a full-throated endorsement of Secretary Clinton...and then zestfully encouraged his backers to vote for her. However...Trump's runner-up - Ted Cruz - would not give any form of approval to the Republican nominee...although the Texas Senator was provided a primetime slot at their convention's podium.
There were no floor fights at the Democratic Convention...as there were with the Republicans. The energy and high-spirited, passionate emotion during the Tuesday night "Roll Call of States" was something so special...and so wondrous...that it electrified everyone in the convention hall...as well as Democrats all across America. This was "Must See TV"...and anyone who missed it...lost out on some of the most inspirational speeches to ever be articulated.
In a powerful speech on Day One...we were once again made aware that America's First Lady - Michelle Obama - is first in so many ways...and that she herself represents the beauty of all women...the beauty of the heart. Such beauty is complemented by their brains. And therefore... equality for women...all women...is unquestionably justified.
On Day Two...sharing moving and tenderly touching anecdotes...former President Clinton opened a window for all of us to peak through, so our eyes could see Hillary Clinton as the loving wife, mother and grandmother that she is...and although the Democratic nominee will excel behind the desk in The Oval Office...President Clinton revealed sweet, sentimental stories about Hillary Clinton the person...not the politician. Mr. Clinton painted a precious picture of a sensitive Mrs. Clinton...as a caring and affectionate woman...whose feelings do not deserve to be hurt by insults and evil lies that have been maliciously spread by Donald Trump and the Republicans.
Following the President's address, I tweeted..."Listening to President Obama, I feel as if I could fly. @POTUS gives me strength to do anything. @HillaryClinton will do the same."
Introducing President Obama was Sharon Belkofer...a Gold Star Mother who lost her son, Tom Belkofer - a U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel - when in 2010, he was killed, at age 44, during a Taliban attack on a NATO convoy in Afghanistan. As Mrs. Belkofer spoke to the convention, she too praised the President. "I wish every American could hug President Obama, so that they could see the good in his eyes...and feel the warmth in his heart."
Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia - who hopefully will succeed Joe Biden as our Vice President - made his pitch why Hillary Clinton is the only logical choice to be our next President. "Bill built a bridge in to the 21st Century...and Barack gave us hope. And now Hillary is ready! She is ready to fight! She is ready to win! And she is ready to lead!"
Chelsea Clinton - who will become the first person to have both her father and her mother be elected President of the United States...should Secretary Clinton defeat Donald Trump - introduced her mom with class and dignity. Chelsea conveyed the deep love that her parents have always had for her...and "that feeling of being valued and loved...that's what my mom works for...for every child. It is the calling of her life."
On Day Four...the crowd at the Democratic Convention was jubilant by Hillary Clinton's appearance... and Democrats were enchanted by her breathtaking address. Three quotes by Secretary Clinton, among many others, stand out in my mind.
"In America...if you can dream it...you should be able to build it." HILLARY CLINTON
"That's why 'Stronger Together' is not just a lesson from our history. It's not just a slogan for our campaign. It's a guiding principle for the country we've always been...and the future we're going to build." HILLARY CLINTON
"So let's be 'Stronger Together.' Looking to the future with courage and confidence. Building a better tomorrow for our beloved children and our beloved country. When we do...America will be greater than ever." HILLARY CLINTON
My recommendation is for all Democrats...all Independents...and all Republicans with an open mind...who did not witness the brilliance of the aforementioned distinguished speakers...along with speeches presented by so many other honorable Americans...to go on-line...and be treated to masterpiece orations.
President Clinton captured Mrs. Clinton in this way. "(Hillary's) sure been worth every single year she's put in...to making people's lives better." I couldn't agree more. Thus...I am certain...that should Secretary Clinton be elected our President...which I am confident she will be...then the eight years - (I'm optimistic for two terms) - of her Presidency...will make the lives of all Americans...better and better.
After Mrs. Clinton's acceptance speech on the final day of the convention...I tweeted..."I felt as if I could fly after President Obama's address. After @HillaryClinton's speech, I'm soaring on Cloud 9 that she'll be our next @POTUS."
Now 19 days later...I'm still on that cloud.
And that's The Controversy for today.
