DONALD TRUMP: THE LIMBO MAN

After reading the commentary below, please express your own thoughts.  Instructions on how to do so are written at the bottom of this column.  Thank you.

Donald "Teflon" Trump insulted Mexicans by calling them "rapists"...and his campaign for President grew.  How?  Why?

Trump says he cares about American veterans.  But in January 2016...U.S. Marine Sergeant Graham Platner told The Washington Post that, "(Veterans) know that (Trump) doesn't give a damn about vets."  Platner made the statement after the GOP candidate disrespected John McCain by saying the Arizona Republican Senator was not a war hero... despite the fact that McCain was caged in a North Vietnamese prison for more than five years; most of which was in solitary confinement and while being tortured.  Yet Trump's horrendous and disparaging words didn't affect his campaign...but instead...it got bigger.  How?  Why?

When the billionaire businessman announced that he wants to ban all Muslims from entering the United States...Trump's support widened.  How?  Why?

In a press conference...Trump mocked a physically challenged reporter by making fun of his disabilities.  Still - after doing so - the Republican front-runner's campaign not only outlasted his contemptible gestures, but advanced in standing.  How?  Why?

When the real estate tycoon verbally bashed Pope Francis...it had no negative bearing on Trump's run for The White House.  His political popularity continued to flourish.  How?  Why?

During protests at a Trump rally, the former reality television star told crowds of his voting public, "If you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato...knock the crap out of them."  Then referring to a particular violent protestor, Trump uttered, "I'd like to punch him in the face."  But even using vulgar, vile and threatening words such as those...Trump's backing thrived.  How?  Why?

And after degrading and slurring women...such as Fox News anchor, Megyn Kelly and former Republican Presidential Candidate Carly Fiorina - among others - Trump continues to win primary after primary.  How?  Why?

But the reprehensible icing on the campaign cake may just be an article that was published on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016 by the National Enquirer. The newspaper - which has endorsed Donald Trump for President - alleges that

Ted Cruz had been involved in multiple extra-marital affairs - five of them - while married to his wife, Heidi.  The Texas Senator has called the claims "garbage"...and "complete and utter lies."  Cruz blames Trump and his "political henchmen" for planting the "disgusting" story.  But the mogul denies any connection to the Enquirer's claims.  However, even though there is no definitive documentation - so far - that Trump arranged - in any way - for the publication of an alleged Cruz sex-scandal...if evidence is discovered that Trump is responsible...will it finally destroy any chances for his nomination by the GOP?  Proof or not...if voters do believe that Donald Trump is in bed with the National Enquirer...will it make a difference to his advocates?  And if not...why not?

I've asked many questions in this commentary.  But it is the mystery of Campaign 2016 as to how and why so many Republicans are casting their ballots for a man whose actions and remarks are so offensive.

In the world of music, it was Chubby Checker who made the song, "Limbo Rock" famous.  But how low...will Donald Trump go?  After all...he has proven - time and time again - that he will say anything... and do anything...in his effort to win his party's nomination.

As a progressive liberal Democrat who staunchly supports former Secretary Of State Hillary Clinton to become the 45th President of the United States...I've been accused, in the past, of "name-calling" when characterizing  certain Republicans.  But whether Trump was in cahoots with the National Enquirer or not..."Despicable Donald" can't be described any other way.

And that's The Controversy for today.
