America and the world is a lot less sunny following the untimely death of one of my favorite actresses. Hollywood legend, Patty Duke, passed away at 1:20 A.M. on Tuesday, March 29th, 2016.
I had the great pleasure of interviewing Anna "Patty Duke" Pearce many years ago on a local radio show in Florida that I hosted and executive produced. Although my listeners obviously knew her as "Patty," I politely asked how she would prefer to be addressed. "Call me Anna," she replied in a charming and friendly way - which I did then...and what I will do now. Those three words were also the title of her best-selling autobiography.
In the theme song - written by Sid Ramin and Bob Wells - of her 1960s big-hit television show - The Patty Duke Show - were the lyrics..."Our Patty loves to rock and roll, a hotdog makes her lose control." And the fun that those words represented for her character...were true, as well, for the real-life Anna...who was loads of fun too. I immensely enjoyed our time together. It was not only an awe-inspiring delight, but a dream come true.
As a pre-tween and tween (yes, boys - not just girls - are tweens) - from 1963 to 1966 - my first celebrity crush was on Patty Duke. And Anna was humbly flattered when I told her so during our broadcast chat together. Now, more than 50 years after her show's debut, I still watch - on MeTV - the reruns of her highly-rated sitcom...where "Patty Duke" starred...as
wildly different, identical cousins, Patty and Cathy Lane.
Anna's son - actor Sean Astin - described his mother on Facebook as an "exquisite artist." And indeed she was. At age 12 - in 1959 - Patty Duke made her Broadway debut as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker...and received critical acclaim and numerous accolades...including the Theatre World Award as "Most Promising Newcomer." She later reprised the role in the 1962 motion picture...and - in 1963 - won a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award and the first of two Golden Globe Awards. At that time, Patty Duke was the youngest person to ever win an Oscar. She was only 16.
Seventeen years after bringing Helen Keller's life to the silver screen, Patty Duke switched parts... and took on the role that won Anne Bancroft an Oscar...as Helen's teacher, Annie Sullivan.
For the 1979 television movie - playing opposite Melissa Gilbert as Helen...Anna won an Emmy Award - one of three that she had earned during her stellar career.
Anna was a powerfully impassioned humanitarian whose life was more about giving than receiving. She talked with me at length about her longtime struggle with bipolar disorder...and her valiant efforts to help others who suffered with the disease. Anna made it her mission to raise money and awareness about mental illnesses. But her philanthropies didn't end there. Anna devoted a tremendous amount of time fighting to find a cure for AIDS.
I could certainly list all of Anna's outstanding accomplishments...and brilliant work in television, film and theatre...but this is my personal tribute to Anna "Patty Duke" Pearce...and so my focus is more about Anna, the person... rather than Patty, the actress.
Anna told me her proudest achievement was
confronting her mental illness head-on...and not hiding from it...or remaining silent. Instead, she gave bipolar disorder a public voice. Anna's courage to come forward...and tell her story to her fans and to all the world...is just one example of how extraordinarily special she was...by using her stardom...to give back...and to help others. Anna "Patty Duke" Pearce will be remembered forever.
I genuinely feel bad about Anna's passing. At 69, she was too young to leave us. An abundantly talented and beloved performer...Anna was a class act. Throughout her nearly 60 years in show-business, Anna's professionalism was first rate...and she was one of the kindest and one of the warmest entertainers I have had the honor and privilege of knowing. She was a one-of-a-kind jewel and a precious human gem.
Several years after my local radio interview, Anna and I had planned a second on-air meeting for my nationally syndicated radio program, Gary B. Duglin Talks With The Stars. Unfortunately, Anna took ill...and by the time we rescheduled...my 7-year series was over, as a result of our nation's economic recession. Not having the opportunity to speak with Anna again was truly a disappointment. But thankfully...the memories from my local show are treasured and cherished in my mind and in my soul.
Patty Duke was ranked 40th by TV Guide...on the magazine's list of "The 50 Greatest TV Stars Of All-Time." I, for one, would move her much, much higher on the list.
To Anna's husband, Mike Pearce... her sons, Sean Astin...actor, Mackenzie Astin...and Kevin Pearce... as well as to Anna's entire family...I offer my most heartfelt thoughts and prayers...and my deepest sympathies...for the loss of someone so special...and so loved.
On March 15th, 2016 - just two weeks before her death - Anna sent her final Tweet, saying..."30 years ago today, Mike and I married. We are having a very happy and quiet day. Love and hugs to all." Love and hugs to you, Anna...from all of us to whom you brought happiness.
The official statement - released by the late star's representative - reads..."Her cause of death was sepsis from a ruptured intestine. She was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend, a mental health advocate and a cultural icon. She will be missed." I couldn't agree more. Patty Duke will indeed be missed. And so will Anna.
And that's The Controversy for today. (But, I doubt there's any controversy this time).

Donald "Teflon" Trump insulted Mexicans by calling them "rapists"...and his campaign for President grew. How? Why?
Trump says he cares about American veterans. But in January 2016...U.S. Marine Sergeant Graham Platner told The Washington Post that, "(Veterans) know that (Trump) doesn't give a damn about vets." Platner made the statement after the GOP candidate disrespected John McCain by saying the Arizona Republican Senator was not a war hero... despite the fact that McCain was caged in a North Vietnamese prison for more than five years; most of which was in solitary confinement and while being tortured. Yet Trump's horrendous and disparaging words didn't affect his campaign...but instead...it got bigger. How? Why?
When the billionaire businessman announced that he wants to ban all Muslims from entering the United States...Trump's support widened. How? Why?
In a press conference...Trump
mocked a physically challenged reporter by making fun of his
disabilities. Still - after doing so - the Republican front-runner's campaign
not only outlasted his contemptible gestures, but advanced in standing.
How? Why?
When the real estate tycoon verbally bashed Pope Francis...it had no negative bearing on Trump's run for The White House. His political popularity continued to flourish. How? Why?
During protests at a Trump rally, the former reality television star told crowds of his voting public, "If you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato...knock the crap out of them." Then referring to a particular violent protestor, Trump uttered, "I'd like to punch him in the face." But even using vulgar, vile and threatening words such as those...Trump's backing thrived. How? Why?
And after degrading and slurring women...such as Fox News anchor, Megyn Kelly and former Republican Presidential Candidate Carly Fiorina - among others - Trump continues to win primary after primary. How? Why?
But the reprehensible icing on the campaign cake may just be an article that was published on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016 by the National Enquirer. The newspaper - which has endorsed Donald Trump for President - alleges that
Ted Cruz had been involved in multiple extra-marital affairs - five of them - while married to his wife, Heidi. The Texas Senator has called the claims "garbage"...and "complete and utter lies." Cruz blames Trump and his "political henchmen" for planting the "disgusting" story. But the mogul denies any connection to the Enquirer's claims. However, even though there is no definitive documentation - so far - that Trump arranged - in any way - for the publication of an alleged Cruz sex-scandal...if evidence is discovered that Trump is responsible...will it finally destroy any chances for his nomination by the GOP? Proof or not...if voters do believe that Donald Trump is in bed with the National Enquirer...will it make a difference to his advocates? And if not...why not?
I've asked many questions in this commentary. But it is the mystery of Campaign 2016 as to how and why so many Republicans are casting their ballots for a man whose actions and remarks are so offensive.
In the world of music, it was Chubby Checker who made the song, "Limbo Rock" famous. But how low...will Donald Trump go? After all...he has proven - time and time again - that he will say anything... and do anything...in his effort to win his party's nomination.
As a progressive liberal Democrat who staunchly supports former Secretary Of State Hillary Clinton to become the 45th President of the United States...I've been accused, in the past, of "name-calling" when characterizing certain Republicans. But whether Trump was in cahoots with the National Enquirer or not..."Despicable Donald" can't be described any other way.
And that's The Controversy for today.

As Americans...and other good people around the world...pray for the injured...and offer our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the devastated families of those innocent souls whose lives were stolen by the tragic insanity of terroristic bastards in Brussels Belgium on Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016...it boggles my mind that at Donald Trump's rallies...his fanatical crowd of voting public...cheers enthusiastically...when the Republican Presidential Candidate rants and raves about his unrealistic plan to confront ISIS.
I'll not forget Trump's speech on November 12th, 2015...when the billionaire businessman told voters in Iowa...that he "would bomb the sh-t out of 'em." This is a man that, so far, an overwhelming amount of Republicans want to be President of the United States? What has America come to...when citizens of our great nation - and yes, we are already great - are desiring to put a man in The White House who uses profanity in a campaign speech? And what kind of a monster wants to target mothers and their children, as a way for the U.S. to annihilate ISIS?
The United States cannot be the monster. ISIS is the monster.
On Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016...President Barack Obama in Argentina and Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton at Stanford University in California...blasted Donald Trump and his GOP opponent, Ted Cruz about "counter-productive" and "dangerous" approaches to defeat ISIS. The President chastised Trump and Cruz by stating..."So when I hear somebody saying - 'We should carpet-bomb Iraq or Syria,' - not only is that inhumane...not only is that contrary to our values...but that would likely be an extraordinary mechanism for ISIL (ISIS)...to recruit more people willing to die and explode bombs." And former Secretary Of State Clinton also referenced the Republicans' threat to "carpet-bomb" by arguing that, "It would be a serious mistake to begin carpet-bombing populated areas into oblivion."
Donald Trump's notion of combating terrorism with ground forces changed recently...when at the March 10th, 2016 Republican Debate on CNN...Trump announced to our country - and to the world - that, "We really have no choice. We have to knock out ISIS. I would listen to the generals, but I'm hearing numbers of 20,000 to 30,000."
But what if it doesn't end there? Would Trump - if Commander-In-Chief - decide later that he needs 50,000 troops to wipe out ISIS? How about 100,000...or more?
During her same speech at Stanford on March 23rd... Secretary Clinton
hammered Trump by voicing, "It would be a serious mistake to stumble in to another costly ground war in The Middle East."
Do the staunch followers of Donald Trump not realize...that the soldiers, airmen, marines and sailors...who would be ordered in to another war zone...could very well be the husbands and wives...mothers and fathers...sons and daughters...and brothers and sisters...of the same people who are engaged in the merriment and applause for Trump and his campaign for President?
When Trump bellows and barks about torturing the enemy...do his backers - the people who are giving Trump standing ovations at his rallies - understand the opposition will do the same to our troops...if they were sent in to harm's way by a President named Trump?
In a recent, comprehensive poll - conducted by the Institute Of Politics at Harvard University - 60% of 18 to 29-year-olds...said they support the United States entering in to another ground war in order to battle ISIS. But while young people seem to agree with "boots on the ground"...85% of that same group admit...that they themselves would not want to participate in such a military endeavor. Therefore...only 15% would volunteer to serve our country. Do those so-called "Millennials" comprehend the fact that it is the 18 to 29-year-old demographic that Donald Trump would be using - if he was President - to build up the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps...and that to increase those four branches of our U.S. Armed Forces...to sizes that Trump wants...may require a draft? Do those young Americans who approve Trump's military ventures overseas, but not themselves going to war...grasp the likely possibility...that with a Commander-In-Chief whose signature is Donald J. Trump...they may be forced to become active service men and women...and be called in to action?
The avid advocates...who are passionately in favor of the real estate tycoon...have apparently - and metaphorically - been drinking too much of Donald Trump's "Kool-Aid." I'm flabbergasted that they would encourage Trump to embroil the United States in a ground war against ISIS.
I, for one, wouldn't want anybody in my family ordered in to a hostile environment for a military operation...that could last many years...and that undoubtedly...and most certainly...would produce monumental bloodshed.
Come January 20th, 2017...when a new American President is inaugurated...the ages of my two nephews will be 26 and 25...and both will be smack-dab in the middle of what would be the 18 to 29-year-old "draft" squads. Folks...I don't want my two nephews sent to war.
Now I don't want criticism from readers...who may come to their own wrong conclusion...that I don't recognize and appreciate the brave men and women of our military who help to keep America free and safe. They deserve every American's eternal gratitude. This is not a commentary against our Armed Forces and our veterans. It is my protest and my objection that Donald Trump is even being considered by some...to be President and Commander-In-Chief of the United States. Trump's dreadfully unprepared and inadequate thinking...are filled with frivolous and half-baked ramblings.
Republicans - young and old - who are so fascinated by...and fervent about...Donald Trump...need to pause...take a deep breath...and clearly think of what would happen if Trump was President. As harsh as this may sound...if Donald Trump ends up being the GOP nominee - which, as I always say, I'm not so sure will become a reality - then a vote for Trump in the general election on November 8th, 2016...is a vote that will probably take the lives of many Americans...if he was somehow elected President. Moms and dads...if you don't want your children...on the front lines fighting ISIS...then don't cast your ballots for Donald Trump.
Of course, I don't believe that Trump - if nominated - can beat Hillary Clinton. I still feel...with the utmost confidence...that the former Secretary Of State will be our nation's 45th President. So I suppose I shouldn't worry. But I'm not a swami or a fortune teller. I have no crystal ball...no tarot cards. And politics is not an exact science. I can only rely on the wisdom...sound judgment... and good sense of Democrats and Independents nationwide. And if I'm wrong...well...I'm not God. And thankfully...neither is Donald Trump.
And that's The Controversy for today.

Today is a milestone for The Controversy. This is the 150th commentary I have written for this blog. Many of you have told me that you have been regular readers since I began posting editorials on November 22nd, 2012 - 40 months ago today. Others have informed me that you only read The Controversy when it's a topic that interests you. And then there are those of you who don't read my columns at all. I hope you are reading this one.
I'm doing something differently today. I'm advising you - or perhaps, warning you in advance - that this essay is considerably longer than most of my compositions. Please read it as if you were reading a printed magazine article...or a newspaper. Remember them? The reason I'm giving you this heads-up will become apparent as you continue to read.
I'm curious to know what it takes for someone to reply to a Facebook posting... or...what it takes for someone to even read what I - or anybody else, for that matter - write on Facebook...or on any Internet or so-called "social media" forum? And if you see a longer than usual posting...do you simply scroll on passed it...or "click"...to something else?
Suppose I posted on Facebook that I won 500-million dollars in a lottery? I didn't...but how many of you would have even gotten to this paragraph and read what I wrote? And if I had won that money...how many of you would comment? Suppose I said I will be dead in 24 hours? Don't worry - that remark was for dramatic license. I don't plan on dying tomorrow. At least I hope I don't. But how many of you read the above statement...or would comment on it...if it was true? And suppose I said that I have hidden the fact that I'm a multi-billionaire...and that I'm running for President of the United States? I'm not either...but did you read that? And if it was a fact...would you reply to it? These questions were asked to merely make a point. I don't expect you to answer them.
Once again I ask...what does it take for people to read a Facebook posting...and what does it take for a "Facebook Friend" to acknowledge and answer that posting? And I don't mean by clicking on a "like" icon.
Are Facebook and other means of "social media" worth all the time spent by Americans and other Earthlings worldwide? Will Facebook, Twitter and other forms of technological connections eventually destroy one-on-one communication in the United States and around the globe? Has it already? Yes. I think it has. Not totally...but at least in part.
I close each and every one of my commentaries with the tag line, "We'll talk again." I do that because those three words have been my broadcast sign-off for a long, long time on my radio shows...and before that...my newscasts. So, I decided to use that phrase to end The Controversy...as it is my trademark slogan. Obviously - in this setting - I am not..."talking" to you...my readers. I am writing...and you are reading. Well...I hope you are. That being said... please ask yourself the following questions.
When was the last time you had a one hour - or even a half-hour - telephone conversation with a friend? And how often do you have such a phone conversation with that same friend...or any friend?
Except for family...a co-worker...or someone else that you see in-person on a regular basis for whatever the reason...when was the last time you spoke with anybody else - who you consider a friend - by telephone...one on one...for 60 minutes? For 30 minutes? For 15 minutes?
The title of this commentary is not to imply that we - only you and I - should talk...but persons everywhere. So why does it seem that most people today recognize "texting" as an acceptable substitute for actual talking? Part of the reason our country has become as polarized, as it is, is because the "art of talking" is disappearing...or has, in many ways, already disappeared.
Equally as bad is the lost "art of letter writing." And I don't mean e-mails. Relatively speaking...nobody...hand writes letters today. Oh I realize that sending a letter via the U.S. Postal Service can take days to reach a destination...and now with the technology of e-mail...that is a more speedy and expeditious way to send a written correspondence. But for those of you over the age of 40...don't you remember the personal touch that you would give a handwritten letter...and the inner warmth you would feel...when you would write one...or receive one? Plus, today, a personal letter by e-mail rarely gets fully read. That is for those that even get written. E-mails - for the most part - are skimmed. A quick little note might get the full attention of the reader...but if somebody sent you a 2, 3 or 4-page letter...by e-mail...would you read it word for word? I've actually been told by people that such a lengthy letter would simply get deleted...and dumped into the trash bin.
Fewer and fewer people are reading e-mails - or text messages, for that matter - that are longer than 4 or 5 short lines...if even that long. Why do Americans today claim they have no time to read or write a long letter? Years ago - as a child... through college...and beyond - I would receive handwritten letters from my grandparents, from my parents, from my siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins...and, of course, from my friends. Some of those handwritten letters, I have kept all these years. I cherish them...and the special memories that accompany them. In fact...as a kid - for several years - I had pen-pals...both male and female...all my age... beginning when I was about 8. And these pen-pals were not from the United States, but from countries all around the world. From England to Japan...from India to Israel...from Peru to Australia...and other nations too...I had written letters to friends in foreign lands...and they wrote to me. And those letters to and from pen-pals - as well as to and from family and American friends - might have been as short as one 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper...or - more often than not - 2, 3 or 4 pages or more. And I always replied similarly. It was wonderful receiving a handwritten letter from a friend or loved one. And writing back was an equally joyous and significant pleasure. Thus, penmanship - years ago - was taught in every elementary school. Is it today? Some schools do, while others don't.
In decades of the past...we made the time to write letters. And we made time to talk on the telephone. Today, people spend a tremendous amount of time on Facebook...or Tweeting on Twitter...or performing other non-one-on-one means of "personal communication." It's one of the reasons why the U.S.A. and other countries have so many devastating problems. We don't write to each other in a personal fashion. And we don't talk...really talk...to each other.
The word, "gab"...is hardly ever used. And "chat"...means to type words in to a little box on a computer screen or mobile device. "Chatting" today...is not talking.
Who do you know today that drops by your house or apartment...just to have a cup of coffee...and to talk? Probably very few people - or more than likely - nobody. That's a custom that seems to have died...but one that would make life in America so much better...if it hadn't.
Someone recently told me that she talked with a friend for an entire day. Stunned by her remark, I responded by saying..."THE ENTIRE DAY?" "Yes," she said. "We texted each other...and continued a conversation, on and off, from morning to night." I'm sorry, but THAT is not a conversation. Plus, texting and e-mails don't convey emotions. Or, the emotions are misconstrued.
I recently texted back to someone who texted me...and the person thought I was insulting her...when that clearly was not my intention. But, as a text, it was misinterpreted. If what I said was spoken in a telephone conversation...she never would have taken it the wrong way.
And then there's e-mail and texting etiquette. Don't get me started on that. Capital letters mean you're shouting. But...in a handwritten letter...it would simply equate to EMPHASIS. And, there are so many more e-mail and texting rules that - to continue in this vein - will only boil my blood. (No pun intended).
I wonder how many of you have actually read this commentary...to this point...have totally read each and every word...and have digested what I have authored? I wonder how many of you will express your own thoughts about what I have written about today? And I wonder if any of you will change - or, at least, try to change - your ways of communication after reading this essay?
Now I'm not at all suggesting that we don't enjoy progress with the various social media formats...but there is no reason to ignore that which is more pure and honest...the person to person telephone call...and a heartfelt and sincere handwritten letter. Plus, of course, the best type of communication - when it's possible - is live and in person. Two people...one to one...talking.
Can we talk? And can we hand write letters? For the sake of our nation...for the sake of our planet...for the sake of the human race...I certainly hope so.
And that's The Controversy for today...Number 150.
